Motivating the DeMotivated - A guide to Corporate Team Building.

In 2006, research conducted by UK based HR Management company Right Management revealed that in comparison to six other industrialised nations, the British workforce was the least motivated, with less than a third of the people asked stating that they felt fully engaged and happy at work. This shocking statistic translates per annum throughout Great Britain, into billions of pounds of lost revenue.

Now contemplate the huge economic downturn since the research was first published and it is safe to assume that this issue will not have improved importantly since. So what is the best way that you can ensure that your company doesn't diminish with a demotivated and dispirited work force?

The answer is quite simple, corporate team building.

There are plenty of synonyms for these games. They can be called team building, corporate events, activities, challenges, team exercises, facilitated games, company team building, department team building but they all refer to the same ideal; that staff undertake an activity that takes them out of their usual working environment and gives them an activity to complete.

The games are specifically designed to raise team cohesion, communication and confidence, to nurture the feeling of working together to reach a shared objective and to enable staff to realise that all colleagues of the team have an imperative part to play in achieving that objective. All of these elements are equally desirable in the office and the research behind these games shows that a team who takes part in a company team building activity, is able to then translate these elements successfully into their projects.

What format of games can be organised?

The answer is whatever you feel would be most enjoyable and effective for your team.

Team building activities have many positive effects on a team. It could possibly lead to building and strengthening leadership skills amongst your team; it may possibly improve communication between employees and thus make a team more effective. It could possibly raise self confidence amongst a employees, employees can be tutored how to negotiate more successfully, they will improve their judgement on matters and the talent amongst a team can be optimised all leading to an improvement in productivity and profitability.

With many specialist firms now dedicated to providing firms with a expansive range of team building events at a cost that suits all budgets. Given the current economic circumstances and the de-motivated British workforce, the question you have to ask is not if your company can afford to organise a corporate team building event, but can it afford not to?
