Mount Wilson Observatory

Located in Los Angeles, the Mount Wilson Observatory is an exceptional astronomical observatory. Also known as the MWO this special observatory is ideally positioned on Mount Wilson near Pasadena. It is magnificently located at an altitude of 5715 feet on the peak of the Southern Californian Mountain.

Envisaged and founded by George Ellery Hale, the Mount Wilson Observatory was opened in December 1904. Since its inception the MWO has played a vital role in worldwide astronomy and is well known for being the home for two of the largest telescopes in the world. It also houses the most powerful and comprehensive facilities for studying the sun. Many revolutionary astronomic discoveries were executed by renowned Scientists with the use of the facilities housed at the Mount Wilson Observatory.

One of the major highlights at this unique Observatory is the historically acclaimed Hooker 100-inch telescope. During the period of 1917 to 1948 Hooker 100-inch telescope was recognised as the largest telescope in the world. On the observatory grounds of the MWO visitors will find an intriguing astronomical museum. The main features of the museum are the historical photographs that have been captured at Mount Wilson Observatory and a collection of important exhibits on ongoing projects conducted in house.

Other highlights here include the three solar telescopes which are extensively used for research and educational demonstrations.

Equipped with an infrared detector, the 24-inch telescope that can be seen even today at the MWO was bought from a military contractor in 1966. It was used to find out the core of the Milky Way for the very first time.
