National Noodles With Peanut Sauce Month?

By: Nate Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Did you know that March is National Women's History Month? If you didn't, you should; the month-long celebration is a federally sanctioned event, and each year the Library of Congress organizes a fabulous online exhibit designed to remind us of women's critical contributions to American history.
But did you know that March is also National Irish-American Heritage Month? (Okay, that makes sense, given that everybody gets to be temporarily Irish on St. Patrick's Day—even if they're not among the 36 million Americans who already claim Irish heritage.) And National Umbrella Month? (Wouldn't it have fit better with "April showers"?) And not only National Peanut Month (tough timing with the salmonella recall this year), but also National Noodle Month and National Sauce Month? (We're sensing opportunities for synergy here; can we get a National Noodles With Peanut Sauce Month?)
In fact, March has been chosen as the commemorative month for dozens of causes. Some of them are serious but not exactly festive (Chronic Kidney Disease Month, Deep Vein Thrombosis Month, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month). Others are earnest but unintentionally hilarious (National Celery Month, International Listening Awareness Month, National Frozen Food Month, Supply Management Month). And then some of them are almost too bizarre to believe (National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month, International Expect Success Month, Play the Recorder Month). "Play the Recorder Month"? Really?
So which March commemorative month is the best? This isn't exactly a great debate to rival teachers questioning whether The Great American Novel is Moby-Dick or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But we cast our vote for National On-Hold Month. Whatever the heck that is.
