Online Business - Creating Trust For Your Online Shopper

Trust is an important commodity in business, especially when working online. In the online marketplace, consumers have many options, and if they feel uncomfortable they will simply move on to another vendor. Creating that trust with your consumer is the best and most efficient way to increase your sales.

The first step is to make your site look professional. Choose a domain name that either reflects the name of your business or the product you sell, since this will be the first experience the customer has with your page and will effect how the search engines index you. Making the site itself clear and easy to navigate will also increase your credibility. Be sure to check regularly for any errors or broken links and get them fixed quickly.

The SSL Certificate is how you actually protect your customer's information. There are a number of companies that offer to encrypt purchase pages, and you will want to choose a reputable one. These are often more expensive, but it is worth the cost to keep crucial information secure. An SSL Certificate will change the address of your site from "http" to "https", so it will become immediately obvious to your customers that the page has been encrypted. Even so, you may want to specify that all transactions will be done over a secure connection.

Offering transactions through PayPal will also increase your legitimacy with potential customers. PayPal is a third party program that processes all purchase information, so that your customer's credit card number is never exposed. There are other third party pay options, such as AlertPay, but PayPal is the most well known. Even customers who do not have a PayPal account may feel more comfortable knowing that your business offers it.

Another way to increase the consumer's trust in your site is to get your business validated by other companies. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is the most important of these. Getting your company registered with the Better Business Bureau legitimises it and allows consumers to see if any complaints have been filed, increasing their confidence. Once registered, display the BBB seal in a prominent place on your website, so customers will see it.

Your customers will also feel more secure in their purchases if you provide a way for them to contact your company. An email address is the most convenient, but is less reassuring due to the delay in response. A phone number will assure your customers that if they should have problems with the product, they can contact a real person. This may also give you the chance to answer questions and increase your sales. Information travels very quickly in the online community, so it is important to respond quickly and helpfully to any expressed concerns. Positive reviews can dramatically improve sales. If you begin hearing the same questions over and over, you may want to save yourself time and add a FAQs page.

Building confidence in consumers online is not as difficult as it may seem. As long as you provide reputable and secure service, your reputation will grow.
