Pipe Relining - What You Should Know

     An important aspect of any building is the water supply and sewerage system. Whether it is a residential home, a business premises or an industry, a building cannot function when the water and waste system is not functioning properly. Pipes which bring in clean water or carry away waste can sometimes crack.

A plumber therefore needs to use the most efficient and cost effective method to repair the pipes. One of the most reliable methods of pipe repair that uses high technology is known as pipe relining.

Why Pipe Relining?

A building may experience a blocked drainage system due to pipes that have been obstructed by roots of trees. Roots are normally attracted to moisture and will therefore crack the pipes to get to the water. It is also possible that the joints of the pipes are not properly aligned causing an accumulation of the waste. The ground is also known to shift from time to time and gradually, you may find that your pipes are misaligned therefore causing a blockage.

One of the solutions to these problems would be to have the entire piping system redone. However, a more efficient method of repairing the pipes is the use of pipe relining.

About Pipe Relining

Pipe relining is a method of repairing pipes that uses high technology to repair the pipe from the inside of the pipe. It is also known as spot repair, patching or cure in place pipe (CIPP). What happens is that an internal liner made from epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester or silicate is inserted into the pipe that is damaged so as to create a mould.

Pipe relining is used to repair a piping system which has parts that are missing or to repair cracked pipes. It is also used to repair pipes that get blocked every other time. This method is used to repair pipes which are aligned vertically or horizontally, whether or not they are hidden from view. Pipe relining can be used to repair different types of pipes including storm water pipes, sewer pipes, cement or cast iron.


When a plumber is carrying out pipe relining, the first step is to inspect the pipes and this is done by the use of video cameras. The plumber is thus able to see the insides of the pipes from a monitor and can therefore identify where the problem is and the nature of the problem.

The pipes are then cleaned using an appropriate method in order to get the original diameter. Relining can then be done and a camera inspection is conducted to ensure that the pipes have been properly repaired.


The use of pipe relining technology removes the need for digging up whatever is above the pipe in order to access it. The pipes used in pipe relining are made from very strong and durable materials including epoxy and silicate which are known to last for up to fifty years. There are no joints in pipe relining which ensures that roots of trees are unable to crack the pipes.

Traditional pipe repair takes many days which is quite inconveniencing as the drains are unusable during this time. With pipe relining however, a job can take only a few hours to repair.
