By taking good care of your dental needs, your teeth will last a lifetime. Dentists recommend the proper brushing and flossing of teeth at least once daily and routine cleanings in the office twice a year. The biggest reasons for losing teeth are gum disease and tooth decay, but dental care can avoid this.

Cavities are another way to refer to tooth decay, and plaque is the culprit behind it, giving your teeth an unsightly white film. Plaque is formed when particles of food and saliva mix with the bacteria that lurks within your mouth. As you consume foods heavy in starch or sugar, acids can be produced that will wear away at your enamel, which coats your teeth.

Enamel can actually break down after too much exposure to plaque, and allow cavities to form. In addition, an accumulation of plaque may result in periodontal disease. Plaque can harden into tartar and accumulate at the gum line when proper dental hygiene, including brushing and flossing, is neglected. During the earliest stage of gum disease which is called gingivitis, brushing of the teeth can lead to bleeding or swollen gum tissue.

Gingivitis can progress to Periodontitis, in which gums pull away from teeth and form pockets that often become infected. Periodontitis, left untreated, causes destruction of supportive tissue, the gums and the jawbone. This may result teeth becoming loose and falling out.

You need not only regular professional attention, but good teeth-cleaning habits at home to help keep plaque under control. Proper brushing includes using short side to side motions at a bit of an angle on your teeth. Brush all sides of your teeth, the front, then the top surfaces, and finally the inside surface, spending roughly two minutes total and follow up with a gentle brushing of the tongue. By brushing your tongue, you will rid yourself of bacteria that causes bad breath. Ideally, you should brush each time you eat, but twice a day is adequate for most people.

Brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush is advised by expertise. You should also want to change out your toothbrush every three to four months, and sooner if the bristles start to splay. The use of an electric toothbrush does not replace flossing. While electric toothbrushes do a fine job, the only way to get the job done thoroughly is to brush on a regular basis, and use floss or another device to get into the spaces between the teeth.

Wondering how to effectively floss? Follow these hints supplied by dental health experts. Your first step is easing a strand of floss between two of your teeth. Secondly pull the floss up and down a few times, curving the floss around the tooth at the gum line. Starting with a long strand, you can then move to a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth, remembering to floss the back of the last tooth.

If the floss sticks or is difficult to pull through teeth, try waxed floss. People who find it difficult to move the floss might get assistance from a floss holder, or from their dentist. It's perfectly normal for some bleeding to occur from the gums when flossing hasn't been part of your normal routine, but if it continues for more than a few days, you should contact your dentist. Cavities are brought on by the consumption of overly sugary foods and drinks, due to the acids that are produced. However, there are a various food choices you can make to help stave off decay. One option is to eat some aged cheese right after the other foods, as it can neutralize the acid that is damaging the enamel.

Apples and pears, in addition to other starchy fruits, will create additional spit which removes any leftover food debris. In addition, they contain a lot of water that will lessen the impact of sugar. Sugar-free gum also generates additional spit, which will help remove the bacteria that leads to decay. Eat and drink healthy foods full of calcium such as green leafy vegetables, yogurt, and milk, or take calcium supplements. Fluoride is also instrumental in battling cavities.

Find out if your water supply includes fluoride. If it does not a fluoride solution may be necessary. If you have healthy teeth, you should still go to see your dentist at least twice a year. Even if you have regularly checkups, you'll want to get to your dentist if your bite changes, you notice your gums are bleeding, or there's pain in any portion of your mouth. You can keep your strong healthy teeth for a long, long time with regular dental checkups and the relentless practice of great oral hygiene.
