Having all of the fundamental emergency storage items, particularly the lower half of the Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Survival Readiness Pyramid, will help to put your mind at ease. Having this gear for an unforeseen emergency is a must. Understanding how to make use of them is a separate matter.

As far as food goes, the short-term supply will be eaten up in short order, and in a longer-term survival circumstance you'll be left with the stuff that takes more preparation and creativity to tempt the palate and whet the appetite. If you're from the fast food generation, or your life is a catch-up game, you may not have some of the skills that your grandmother did. Baking homemade bread from scratch might just be unworkable.. But, bear in mind, wheat is the staff of life, and grains should make up the largest part of your long-term food storage (about 400 lbs. per adult for one year). If you're not Asian, you may not be eating rice nearly every day either, and you perhaps don't know all of the numerous ways to put it to use. Beans end up a close third, but you also might not know diddly about cooking these either. Sure you could get by and survive, but is your preference a couple of things to be your only options day in and day out? Probably not!! It's bad enough to be in a survival situation (although think positive, things will get better), you are going to want to eat well.

Enter a food storage cookbook filled of recipes designed to find ways to help all of the so-called "dull" ingredients in your long-term food storage comes in handy and lends proper meaning to making variety the spice of life. You'll be pleasurably amazed with what you can do with wheat, rice, and beans, and all of the other goodies you've so faithfully stockpiled, but haven't given much reflection to making a delicious meal out of.

Having all of your emergency food storage supplies, but being inadequate in what you know how to do with them would be a big letdown in case you ever need to use them. It's be an exceptional concept to break out some of the emergency food storage right now and get going experimenting with some recipes. Rotate out some of the items that are nearest expiration, and make this your dress rehearsal. It is better to polish your skills at the present than to start only when individuals are depending on you to lighten their load with good eats during trying times. Maybe you aren't a miracle worker, but by means of a food storage cookbook and rehearsal, you'll indeed know how to change the commonplace into something great!
