Resveratrol has been highlighted on well-respected shows like "60 Minutes," "Good Morning America" with Dr. Oz, and by well-respected T.V. interviewers such as ABC's Barbara Walters. So what is all the hype about? Why have you been hearing so much about resveratrol?

It has been discovered that resveratrol, which is found in red wine, is a very beneficial substance. It is what causes the red wine to be red in the first place. Resveratrol is a substance that is naturally found in large concentrations in the skin of grapes as it helps to protect the grape plants from being destroyed by bacteria and fungi in the environment.

Many people have heard of the French Paradox before. Despite eating diets high in fat, having a high population of smokers, and many with high cholesterol, the French have considerably less heart disease than their American and Canadian counterparts do. Could it be that the red wine that the French so often drink is positively affecting this? The answer is, "yes, it appears that way."

So how does resveratrol work exactly? It has been found that resveratrol triggers the sirtuin gene in our bodies to be activated. Normally, this gene is not active. However when this gene is active, it is known that we can live a longer life by decreasing the chances for diseases that come with aging. So in effect, resveratrol is slowing down aging, and delaying or even preventing the diseases that appear as we age. These kinds of diseases include cancer, Alzheimer's dementia, cancer, and all types of heart disease.

It has also been learned that eating too much food turns off the sirtuin gene, so lifespan decreases. This has been studied in rodents. However when researchers cut the rodents' calories, the genes of longevity were turned back on. As a result, the rodents lived longer.

Researchers also fed two mice diets that were high in fat, but only one mouse was supplemented with resveratrol. When put on a treadmill, the mouse who was taking the resveratrol could run farther and live longer. Researchers found that mice taking resveratrol do not gain as much weight, and even the insides of their bodies contain less fat even though they are fat on the outside.

So this is all great if you are a rodent, but how do we get this resveratrol? Should we all go out and start drinking red wine? No, because you would need to drink way too much (hence you would consume way too many calories and increase your chances for alcoholism). It is estimated that you would need to drink one thousand bottles of red wine per day! Yikes! Instead, resveratrol supplements are being created that essentially do the dieting for you, and keep your sirtuin gene active.

In summary, resveratrol is very exciting in that scientists may have finally found the fountain of youth! Resveratrol is showing promising results in being able to prevent and treat the diseases of aging so that we can all live longer and healthier lives!
