If you are one of the thousands of people who wish to work from home, but are being held back because of fear, you are not alone. Many people want to know how to make extra money or even a living off of the Internet, but are worried about being scammed. The truth is that there are lots of business opportunities on the Internet and lots of scams as well. If you learn how to recognize a scam, you will be able to choose good business options.

If a business has any of the following, then it is likely that it is a scam:
- You have to sign up to the company and pay them money, but they seem to have no product or service.
- The website appears to have been thrown together and doesn't look or feel professional.
- You don't get enough details to know exactly what the opportunity is before you pay money for it.
- If there isn't any contact information than it is a scam. If the only contact information is an e-mail address and it is in the form of a yahoo, gmail, hotmail, or other free e-mail account it isn't likely a professional option and should be avoided.
- You call them, but are never able to talk to a real person and are either stuck with their automated answering service or you leave a message, but no one calls you back.

Additionally you should always do a search online. This usually brings up pages of people saying how wonderful the program is. These should be ignored because they can be bought or even written by the same person who set up the website. Instead look for negative reviews. These will give you a better idea of whether or not it is a scam. Just because there are negative reviews doesn't mean it is a scam, but find out why the people are unhappy and you will find out whether or not it is a scam. There are many sites that list scams as well and if your opportunity is listed on one of these sites, it is best to avoid it.

There are also a few signs that can be used to identify real companies and real business opportunities.
- Products are geared for a specific market.
- The company site should look and feel well put together. All the information you need to decide about whether or not you want to do it should be at your finger tips.
- There should be a way to contact the company if you have additional questions.
- There should be training materials available for you to get to know your products and services.

When it comes down to it there are a few things to remember. If it sounds too good to be true, than it probably is and you want to make sure you do a lot of research before paying any money. Additionally, there is money to be made, but reality says you aren't going to make thousands a week for a few hours worth of work. It will take dedicated work to build your business up and to make money.
