By: Alan B. Densky, CH

Many people are uncomfortable or experience some degree of anxiousness when pushed into a new situation or a crowd of people they don't know. Unfortunately, for roughly 10 percent of Americans, social anxiety can be so severe as to be disabling. Experts now estimate that an even larger number of people probably suffer from more mild forms of social anxiety that can cause significant issues in everyday social interactions.

The term for this kind of anxiety is 'social phobia'. It usually happens when someone experiences fears or worries that often are caused by being involved in a social event. For people who have social phobia, anxiety can occur in many different types of situations, including shopping, attending a party, public speaking, standing in front of a group of people, or being given an interviewed. Leading experts now think that social phobia involves issues with self confidence.
