Sound cancelling headphones appeared on the marketplace a while ago. At first, they were used in aircrafts to cover the noise of the engines. The first high quality sound cancelling headphones were developed by Amar Bose, CEO of Bose Technology. He quickly realised that the head phones currently on the market presented some issus. In the 80s, Bose Technology was the fisrt company to make available this technology to the public. Two questions remain, how do they work and what makes high quality sound cancelling headphones?

Sound cancelling headphones have a microphone that record in real-time the sounds it hears. It then takes those sounds and turns them inside out so they are the inverse of the sounds recorded. By applying the inverted sounds against the actual sounds the noise is eliminated. This is done in real time. As a result of the need for real time canceling the head phones work best with constant sounds such as air conditioning units rather than any quick changes of sound. So they remove several sounds, but not all.

All sound cancelling headphones need a battery to work. In some models the battery is housed with the cables which can make it fairly inconvenient. However most sound cancelling headphones today have both the technology and the battery located in the head phones themselves. This reduces the outside bulk and makes them much more convenient and portable. Good headphone will continue to work even if the battery runs out, the noise cancellation technology simply won't be operating in these cases.

The 2 main versions of head phones are the over ear surround model and the on ear models. The ear surround model works somewhat like a pair of air muffs. As well as passively reducing the sound getting into the ear canal, the cancellation technology reduces sound even further. Though they can be heavier than the alternative and a number of people find them sweaty when used for long periods of time.

The on ear version of sound cancelling headphones is a lot lighter but they do not cover the complete ear area. They are oftentimes lighter and allow more airflow as a consequence. They are also less capable of filtering out loud noises.

On feature to watch out for when evaluating models is whether the cable can be detached. This is useful if you just want to sit and remove airplane noise or the like, and don't necessarily want to listen to music. This is helpful when you are concerned with guarding against loud noises such as during a flight or while operating your lawn mower or other power equipment.

If you use sound cancelling headphones on a regular basis such as for your job or travel, you may need to transport them safely. Check for the carry case that suits you. Numerous come in soft cases, which may be easier to pack in luggage, but will provide little protection from outside shocks. If you think you will knock them around a lot it will pay to look for a protective hard case.
