Special Christening Gift Ideas

A christening is a special event for everyone involved, the child who is due to be christened, the parents, grandparents, relatives, friends and godparents. When deciding what sort of gift you would like to buy for a christening you can choose to go with the trend and choose a traditional gift, or opt for something more modern.

Whichever type of gift you decide upon there are a few things you should take into consideration before making your final choice.

1. Consider the family who has arranged the christening. Are they the type of people who will appreciate keepsakes and treasure it within the family, or are they people who might welcome a more practical gift? If you are really not sure, then a safe option for you would be to choose an item that is both. A gift that can be treasured and is also practical is a photo album or photo frame, filled with photos of the christening it can be kept and looked at again and again for many years.

2. Consider your role in the life of the child. If you have a special role in the child’s life, such as Godparent, then your choice of christening gift should represent the special and lifelong bond that will exist between you. Generally godparents will spend more money on a baptism gift than others who attend, such as friends or distant relatives. Suitable items in this case could be cufflinks, something that they will treasure and look forward to wearing as they grow older. Most cufflinks can be easily engraved with a special message for the young child, this service is often free as part of the purchasing process.

If you are a friend or relative of the child then depending on whether you choose to buy something traditional or modern you will find there are plenty of gifts that offer both practicality and meaning as a christening gift.

3. Consider the religious aspect. A christening can have a lot of religious meaning for some families and the gift you give could reflect their beliefs. There are some religions that have more traditional christening gifts specific to that particular religion, and at other times a christening is not so much a religious event but more of a baby naming ceremony.

4. Consider your budget. Ensure that your choice of gift is within your budget. It isn’t necessary to spend a lot of money on a christening gift, there are many suitable items that can fit any budget and you can always make these baby christening gifts more personal by having them engraved.

For some people, a christening is a deeply religious occasion and they may feel the need to spend a large amount of money on a gift. Whatever you spend it is always down to your own preference and choice, whether it is top of the range or from the lower end of the scale, but if it has been personalised for the child it will mean just as much whatever the cost.

Overall you will find that more traditional christening gifts are made of silver. Most silver items can be engraved with words, dates and even photographs that can make them extra personal. These kinds of gifts have been given for centuries and remain very popular today.

Here are some good gift ideas if you are the godparent or part of the family:

Cufflinks

Photo frames or photo albums

Drinking vessels such as tankards

Money boxes

Silver plated dummies

First tooth trinket boxes

Silver plated birth certificate holders

Rosary beads

First Communion sets

Most of the items listed above can easily be found online or at retail stores and engraved with a personal message, a specific date or photographs. They will also come with a special presentation box that makes the christening gift look even more spectacular. Look online for more unique and desirable items.
