Static Caravans: A Guide To Buying And Insuring

Does the idea of taking more holidays appeal to you? A great way to be able to do this is by buying a static caravan. This will enable you to take a holiday at much shorter notice, and much cheaper than is generally expected.

However, if you are genuinely thinking of spending your precious money on a static caravan, then there are several things you should you should consider before investing your cash.

Unlike touring caravans, static caravans can be subject to various locational risks at the site where it is kept. Such unforseen events as storms, falling trees and flooding are ignored by lots of potential owners, despite how commonly they occur. Also there is the chance that during the winter months pipes could freeze solid and burst, which would cause a major headache to owners of static caravans.

When you have identified a park that interests you, it is very important that you find out from the owners whether the site has ever been subject to storm or flood damage. If you discover that it has then this could prevent you finding reasonably priced insurance for your static caravan on the site.

Even if the site owners say flooding is not a problem you would be sensible to also do a further check to identify whether the site is in an area that is at risk of flooding. To find this out you need to know the post code of the site. If the park is located in England or Wales, then you will need to go to the Environment Agency flooding page on their website and input the post code into the box on the right-hand-side of the screen. If the site is in Scotland then you will need to visit the website of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

You can also look on google's mapping technology to locate the site and the caravans more exactly before referring back to the flooding map for a more precise idea to the flooding risk that exists. Places that in particular can be difficult to get insurance due to flooding are Lincolnshire and Norfolk, low-lying coastal areas of North Wales, and sites close to major rivers such as the Severn and the Avon rivers.

It is a fact that the large majority of holiday home/static caravan sales are of already sited caravans. The transaction will be made either by the site owner themselves, or the owner in the case of a second-hand caravan (with the permission of the site owner).

You may find it is possible to buy a pitch without a van upon it and arrange with the site owner to have it sited there. In such circumstances the owners of the site will expect a significant payment to permit the siting of a caravan as they would expect to make a profit on the sale of a sited caravan.

As a result you will pay a good deal more for a caravan that is sited than an unsited caravan. But you should note that the are strongly advised to ensure your insurance policy covers you for anyloss of income in the event that your caravan becomes uninhabitable. If you don't then you could be risking an expensive double hit: the excess costs of any repairs; and also the financial loss during the time the caravan is being fixed.

It is very advisable to also make sure you have liability insurance if it is a caravan you rent out. Should somebody get injured (or worse) resulting from something for which you are found to be at fault, then you face the very real possibility that you could be many thousands of pounds poorer. Liability insurance will ensure that any court and medical costs incurred by you resulting from such a scenario will be paid for.

Make sure that you get yourself educated if you are considering buying a static caravan, and also make very sure that you have adequate insurance cover. As with most things in life it is a good idea to check with multiple providers for your static caravan insurance, as this will probably save you a good deal of money. You will find there are various excellent insurers on the market, ready to provide you with exactly what you require.
