Nowadays, it’s becoming much more common for universities and schools to offer study abroad programs. These courses are a great way for students to become immersed in another culture and their language and history. While many students are thrilled at this experience, their parents may be more cautious. It’s a good idea to begin thinking about your trip by making a personalized check list, talking to your parents, and finalizing any last minute details with your school. With so many things on the agenda, problems after you’re in the foreign country can often be overlooked. Below are some helpful tips to keep in mind as you plan your trip.

A good place to start is by learning as much as you can about the country you are visiting before you go. It’s very important to be somewhat versed in the customs and local laws of the area you are going to be residing in. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to carry a pocket dictionary in the appropriate language of the country you are visiting. Many times during study abroad trips, teachers will give students free range to travel the area in groups and singles, and in the event that you get lost or simply want to take in the country by yourself, you’ll definitely need to be at least somewhat versed in the language. Past that, a dictionary is a great backup in case you need to ask questions or get directions.

A prepaid visa card is another must have when traveling abroad. Your parents can initially put funds on the card for your entire trip and if you need more money, it can be transferred easily from their bank account or from a PayPal account. Additionally, you can always check the available funds of the card online and since Visa is accepted all across the world, you shouldn’t have any problems with your purchases. Also, prepaid visa cards have the added security cash doesn’t always provide. It’s not uncommon for Americans to get taken advantage of in foreign countries, and many times they are financially taken advantage of. With a prepaid visa card, you can have the card canceled before anyone has time to spend the money on it. Additionally, leaving a combination of cash and cards in a safe place in your hotel room (as opposed to on your body) is always a good idea.

With so many things on your mind in regards to packing, it’s often easy to overlook packing essentials, like backups of medicine. Many of the over the counter medicine and prescriptions you often get at your local pharmacy or grocery store cannot always be so easily acquired when traveling abroad. It’s very important to schedule a doctor’s appointment in order to get a full supply of your prescriptions. With the whirlwind of new people and experiences all around, it’s easy to misplace your medicine or leave it in a hotel room. It’s best to have backups of all necessary prescriptions in order to be fully prepared.

Above are just a few of the many tips to keep in mind when you’re considering studying abroad. It’s the attention to detail beforehand that will make for an even better trip once you’re across the country.
