Stuff 101 - A Toilet Fence - The New Dog Fence

By: Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Lately I have been thinking about fences. Actually it was my dog Charlie that made me realize that I needed a bigger better fence. She is a guard dog by nature, half Rottweiler and half German Shepherd, and she patrols the yard with vigour. Anyone, and I mean anyone, even thinks of walking down the public sidewalk in front of my house they get a blast of ferocious barks and the sight of a 120 pound dog straining to get over a four foot high chainlink fence.

It is not surprising that many people have already lodged numerous complaints lodged with the Bylaw department. My dog is now on the bad dog list. So I figured it was time to upgrade my residential fence, something that would keep my dog in and the public safe. I turned to the Internet to research some information and what I found about fences was so interesting and ridiculous I thought I would share it.

You see, fences these days can be made from just about any type of material you can imagine. From traditional wood fence and chainlink varieties to fences made from aluminum, pvc and even wrought iron. What I stumbled across however can only be described as a redneck fence. If you have yet to see the photos, I am talking about the Toilet Fence.

The first Toilet Fence I found was in Soap Lake, Washington. This Toilet fence borders the first hole at the Lakeview Golf & Country Club. Rick Froebe, a plumber by trade, says he erected his toilet fence to deter golfers from approaching his property for the following reasons. If the golfers no longer approach his property, his dogs will no longer bark. If the dogs no longer bark his neighbours will no longer file noise complaints. If there are no noise complaints, the sheriff's department will no longer fine him for noisy dogs.

I can feel for Rick in this regard, however I don't think the toilet fence is the option for my Charlie and I. If anything a toilet fence in this neighbourhood will not only attract more people causing my dog to bark more but will most likely bring the Bylaw police down to fine me for some eye sore type of bylaw.

So that was the first toilet fence I found, mind you I was only looking for information on dog fences. Intrigued Rick's Toilet Fence I had to keep searching. Low and behold I found another.

The next toilet fence I found comes from Cincinnati, Ohio. In protest of not being able to put up a 6-foot-high cedar fence in their yard, due to a quirky zoning variance in Anderson Township, Robin Sutton and Allen Lade decorated their property line with a toilet fence made up of 15 toilet planters and dozens of multi-coloured toilet brushes. "It's colourful. It's bright. It's humorous," Says Allen Lade.

Toilet fences are definitely not for everyone, and as for myself the search continues for a viable fencing option that will keep the people safe by keeping Charlie inside our property. What I need is a fence made out of something that will distract her from the goings on in the neighbourhood. I wonder if you can buy used fire hydrants anywhere?
