Eat Unprocessed Foods

It has been determined that our health can be improved by eating fresh, whole foods.

A article titled "The Secrets of Living Longer" from National Geographic Magazine studies why some groups of people seem to live longer than those of other societies. There are three cultures of people around the world, the article mentions, that live extremely long life spans while suffering from very few of the diseases that kill so many throughout the rest of the world. Essentially, there are three things they've found in these people's diets that are contribute to their long life and great health. The three groups of people, the Sardinians, the Okinawans, and the Adventists, eat low calorie diets that consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Whole plant foods slows your body's digestive processes. It will allow for better absorption of nutrients and will provide a balance of essential nutrients. This will result in better cell growth management, maintenance, and cell division. It will also result in a better regulation of your appetite and your body's blood sugar levels. Regularly scheduled meals are preferable to infrequent meals. Swiss Sciences nutrition advocates such an approach to nutrition.

Avoid Processed Foods

Omnivorous hunter-gatherers are what humans have evolved to be over the last quarter of a million years. The diet of early humans varied based on location and climate. People that lived in more of a tropical environment tended to survive on a more plant based diet. People in higher latitudes usually survived on a diet with more animal products.
The development of Agriculture occurred around 10,000 years ago. With agriculture humans were able to add items such as wheat, rice and potatoes to their diet. Farming culture provided milk and dairy products, and made it easier to include meats and vegetables.

This started to change around 200 years ago during the Industrial Revolution. With the new ability to process food, quite a few technologies have been invented that can keep food fresher for longer allowing it to last longer without spoiling. Many of these new technologies also altered the state of the food as it is in nature.

One of the main processes used which allows food to stay fresh for longer periods of time is pasteurization. It also greatly alters the nutritional content of the food, though. The safety of many foods has been increased as a result of pasteurization and the possibility of bacterial infection has decreased, however, there are some bad consequences to this process.

Diseases related to obesity have been increasing throughout the world. These food processing technologies have been a huge contributor to this development. It is so much cheaper and easier to produce foods in this way and they last a lot longer. Greater quantity of consumption of these cheaper and longer lasting foods around the world has resulted in a huge spike in nutrition related health problems .
