Do you need to file back taxes with the IRS? Those in this position cannot afford to wait any longer. You have to file your tax returns and you don’t have time to waste because interest and penalties will add up. The Internal Revenue Service in this economic downturn is struggling with declining tax revenues so now more than ever you want to get into compliance with the IRS. The IRS wants you to move forward as quickly as humanly possible and will coerce you through tax liens and levies (bank levies, wage garnishment and the likes) if you don't comply.

Why Should I File?

Realize that no tax resolution is possible (IRS payment plans to tax settlement solutions) without you first filing an IRS tax return. In many cases, the IRS will file a Substitute Tax Return which means they file it for you and you lose all potential deductions and credits you may have had for that year. This is why you should file quickly but making sure to pay attention to detail while completing the process.

The only problem with this is that some people do not know how to file IRS taxes. Are you one of them?

How Do I File Tax Debt or Back Taxes?

To successfully file taxes from this year the past you need to follow four important steps. When you do you will easily make your way through the process, and in turn help yourself as well as the IRS.

Here are the four steps to follow:

1. Collect all the necessary information. Just like any other return, when filing old taxes you need have all the proper documents on hand. In particular, you need your W-2, bank interest statement, stock account statements and documents for the year you are filing for. If you cannot find this information you can contact the IRS for the proper income data at least for your W-2.

2. Prepare the proper tax forms. If you are filing a tax return for more than one year you need a separate tax return form for each one (individuals use the 1040 form for the year you are applying for). You can easily find the appropriate form by searching irs.gov.

3. Contact a tax firm if you need help. Some people find it hard enough to file their taxes for the current year, let alone those from the past. If you don’t know how to file back taxes you should strongly considering hiring a tax firm with experience? A tax attorney or certified public accountant may be your best choice.

4. Filing your tax return or tax debt - This is not the same as preparing the forms, but instead the act of actually sending the proper documentation to the IRS. Before you send off your return(s) make sure it is 100 percent accurate, and that you are forwarding it to the correct address (listed on the IRS website for your particular state as different states will send it to a different IRS address).

It may sound difficult to file back taxes, but most people in this position find it to be simple if they follow the steps above, read IRS form 1040 as well as use the IRS's website. For those in need, many tax resolution firms are available to provide you will help in not only filing, but also how you will pay and what you will pay in the end.
