The Best Careers on Satellite TV

As a child, did you ever want to be an alligator wrestler or shark wrangler? A rocket designer or a whiskey ambassador? Those careers were among my numerous dreams as an infant, but somewhere along the way I guess they stopped seeming possible to me. But as I flip through the channels on my satellite TV, I am cheerfully reminded that there are still a lot of crazy professions in this world. There are the inventors who made my plasma HD TV possible, and the art designers who make the emblems for television stations. There are shows about mad scientists and explorers, underwater basket weavers and fortune cookie writers. Some of the wildest careers are even featured with their very own programs. These shows are amusing no matter how you watch them, but I like to watch them as career guides and imagine what life would be like in one of these professions:

Crocodile Hunter - Sure this high-speed nature show is governed by the charismatic Steve Irwin, and he paid for his risky career with his life, exterminated in 2006 as the result of a stingray's barb -- but dream what life must be like as a crocodile hunter! The HD close-ups are incredible on my TV screen, but they must be even more breathtaking in real life. Irwin combed swamps, deserts, and every other imaginable outside setting on the planet in search of intriguing creatures. Sounds like a pretty good life to me.

Iron Chef - Any career preceeded immediately by "iron" sounds rather incredible to me. Just think – the Iron Pilot, the Iron President - it gives such a sharp edge to just about any title. That said, being a chef has never looked as desirable as it does with these gods of cuisine. I think most of us aim for bare competency in the kitchen, so having the skills to create gourmet creations out of any ingredient - in a setting where you're judged and timed, no less - is itself a dream. This is one of the best shows there is on satellite TV.

American Idol - The allure of this career is fairly blatant by how popular the show has been since it first appeared. Who would pass up on being the next king of rock and roll or the queen of soul? Can you conceive what it’d be like filling out paperwork for a credit card and when you come to job title you get to write "Idol of the American people". Sadly it takes a whole lot of developed vocal talent and dancing talent (and the ability to still look chic in high definition) to get this job.

American Inventor - It does not have the same prestigious appeal as being an god, but I believe being an American inventor sounds just as rewarding. The word inventor brings to mind crazy appliances and Rube Goldberg machines with lots of pulleys and gears. In part, that's exactly the kind of engineering misadventure that gets proposed on this reality TV show, though other machines are simple and streamlined. I'm not sure what I would invent, but I think if I could, I would return to the beginning of time and invent the NFL Sunday Ticket myself.

Find these and other dreams jobs on satellite TV. Who knows, if you come up with something new and wild enough, maybe you can get your own show one day!
