Silver jewelry pieces have become increasing popular accessories for many women and men. Numerous people prefer the look and price of silver jewelry over gold jewelry. Silver is also a great compliment for diamonds and other precious or even costume gemstones and jewels.

Silver jewelry can be found in cheaper design selections as well as in finer, more valuable selections. No matter which type of jewelry is in your jewelry box, it is important to learn how to properly care for silver jewelry to keep its shine and beauty for a lifetime of wear.

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to take care of your jewelry of this type is to wear it. Wearing your jewelry helps keep it from tarnishing and losing its shine. Wearing and handling silver jewelry slows down the oxidation process that causes tarnishing and helps keep it shiny and beautiful. Therefore, saving your jewelry for special occasions may actually be causing more harm than help. It is best to take it out, show it off, and enjoy wearing it.

When it is necessary to store the jewelry, storing it properly is also a key factor in keeping it well conditioned. Storing silver jewelry in separate plastic bags and in different compartments of a jewelry box is the best method. Some jewelry boxes are even designed with tarnish free materials to protect silver pieces. If your box does not have this feature, consider buying tarnish free paper that you can cut into strips and use to line the compartments that will hold your silver pieces.

Polishing cloths are a great way to give your jewelry periodic added shine. Simply wipe down the jewelry with these special cloths during cleaning sessions. The cloth can be found at jewelry stores, supermarkets, and even some hardware stores. They remove fingerprints, dust, dirt, body oils, and grime from the jewelry. Cloths are a much safer method of cleaning for silver jewelry. Do not attempt to clean the jewelry pieces with dipping solutions in which the pieces are dipped or soaked. These solutions may appear to work in the beginning but will cause damage in the long run.

While wearing your jewelry is good for its upkeep from tarnishing, be cautious about wearing it in certain situations. For example, silver jewelry should be removed before entering spas or mineral baths. These may cause the jewelry to turn black.

If you own silver jewelry accompanied by precious stones such as rubies or diamonds, it is important to take the pieces to the jeweler about once a year for a check up. The jeweler will polish the jewelry and check to ensure that the stones are secure and have not loosened over time.

While at one point in time silver jewelry was not considered to be as sophisticated and elaborate as gold, it has evolved to become a very elegant sight on a women's neck, wrist, or hand. Many fine pieces of jewelry are created of silver. Therefore, learning to take of your silver jewelry is an important skill to learn.
