The Cost of Lasik Surgery

By: Jayson Lee Click author's name for more of his/her articles

I paid about $2,200 per eye for my lasik surgery approximately three years ago and that figure looks to be in keeping with most pricing I have reviewed of late in additon to quotations from others I know who also had lasik done more recently than I. My costs covered all the pre-surgery examinations and the post lasik appointments as well. In my case, additional surgery was not needed, but if I had needed additional surgery it would have cost me a few hundred dollars more.

Through my own experience and research, I think it is fair to say that you can expect to pay anywhere from $1700 to $3000 per eye. I know that is a wide range, but your total will depends on the procedure used, the amount of correction necessary and other variables like pre and post surgical care offered. My estimate is derived from my own findings and experiences so obviously your mileage may vary. In light of the poor US economy at this time in addition to the unwillingness of most health insurance companies to help in paying for the lasik procedure, price is virtually always a major concern for anyone considering lasik.

$1700 to $3000 per eye might be viewed as high if you have been swayed by advertisements claiming to offer lasik for below $1000 per eye. My advice about these supposed rock bottom priced lasik procedures is to be very skeptical of these often heavily promoted rock bottom prices. They may be leaving out pricing for needed services such as pre surgical exams and post surgical care just to get you to come in where you will likely be given the hard sell. When all is said and done and the total cost of your surgery and extras are revealed their quotes are on par with or above other surgeons. Such advertisers might also be neglecting to disclose the eligibility requirements to actually receive the low cost being promoted. Requirements may be such that a very few future clients can actually have their surgery done at the advertised cost. Always do your investigating completely and ask any question you can think of in order to be clear on how much you will have to pay and exactly what that price includes. Even though the cost of lasik was a major concern for me too, there was no chance I would have picked out a lasik provider only based on cost.

Financing is one way a lot of patients elect to pay for their procedure. Most lasik providers usually offer payment plans, but not all will. If you plan to finance, make sure you ask about and understand the terms before you agree to anything. All of the centers I checked out in my area had financing available, though ultimately I did not use a payment plan.

If you are employed, getting in touch with your Personnel department could also prove fruitful when considering how you will pay for lasik surgery. Your company may have a special deal with a nearby lasik provider to offer lower prices for company employees. If you are a US resident, your company might also offer a flexible spending account program you can participate in as well. Flex accounts permit you to set aside money for non-reimbursible medical costs on a pre tax basis. Most cosmetic surgery including lasik in addition to many other costs can be reimbursed via an FSA. Check with your employer.

Whether the economy is strong or weak, the cost of lasik eye surgery is virtually always going to be a factor for people when researching whether or not to undergo lasik surgery. Price cannot be forgotten but it should obviously not be the only factor shaping the decision. Be doubtful of low prices that appear too good to be true. Discuss lasik financing with any potential provider. Talk to your employer also, as you may be eligible for a lower price or alternative arrangement.
