In this commentary we examine one of the best current low GI diet plans today: the well-liked Diet Solution Program (DSP). DSP is rated as: "one of the most comprehensive books I’ve ever read and the closest thing to a nutrition bible which I’ve encountered," by weight loss authority John Davenport. We also discuss differences with and similarities to prevalent metabolic glycemic index (GI) diet plans. Due to the current obesity epidemic, these plans are growing rapidly in numbers. Isabel De Los Rios is creator of the Diet Solution Program. She received an academic degree in Exercise Physiology. Isabel is a well-known speaker on issues of diet and wellness. Her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, and she runs her own health and wellness clinic in New Jersey. As a wellness enthusiast, and having had impressive success with glycemic index diet plans, I'm often asked my opinion about new popular diets for comparison. In my own case, I've lost 35 pounds using a low GI diet plan and both know and am grateful for the science underpinning this approach. Most of our personal successes are with the Healthy for Life Program, established by Dr. Ray Strand. Healthy for Life has been "field tested," with acknowledged outcomes, under the rules of the Western Review Board of the FDA. Healthy for Life recognizes that not all carbohydrates are the same. Actual test results are used to verify the GI "score" of foods on a 0 to 100 scale, so that precise meal recommendations can be made. Due to proven scientific results, Healthy for Life may be viewed as a benchmark. DSP similarly understands the fact that foods that swiftly "metabolize" into sugar are unhealthy. They recognize the glycemic stress following poor meal choices that drives blood insulin levels beyond the limits. The DSP methodology is identical to low glycemic diet plans, including advising of certain foods to steer clear of vs. select. This is identical to the familiar glycemic index diet plans. For instance, the guidance in Jorge Cruise's "Belly Fat Cure" is also similar to DSP. The Belly Fat Cure, especially, recognizes that the kind of calories are much more important that the amount consumed. DSP provides comparable recommendations for healthy vs. unhealthy fats and guidance on the processed foods to stay away from for best outcome. And, DSP uses the consistent calorie counting advice, often heard in most glycemic index diet plans, which is: "You don't need to count calories." All in all, the Diet Solution Program provides the same basic guidance as we've seen in a number of other glycemic index diet plans. They seem to have recognized the advantages for their approach, based on experience vs. science. This is of little import since results are what matter. Finally, DSP is set apart from common glycemic index diet plans, by having metabolic typing to provide specific recommendations. This makes DSP different from otherwise alike glycemic index diet plans, because of the fact that it features an individualized approach. We conclude that DSP is very similar to other low glycemic diet plans and with added features that may appeal to some.
