Practicing Soccer Drills at Home

As an athlete, you must realize that your expertise and skill as a soccer player is ultimately determined by yourself. Practice both on and off the field is key. Each of us, no matter how much we try to hide it, has her own strengths and weaknesses on the field. Time at home is a great time to work out some of these weaknesses with a brother or sister or parent. You do not have to reinvent the wheel; using exercises that you do during official practice will help improve your game. Practicing at home also helps make your family interested in the sport. You can involve your family members by both playing with them and inviting them to your soccer games. Even if all you do is dribble the ball to and from practice, this in itself will increase your ball handling ability.

Three Valuable Soccer Skills

Strength, speed, and agility are all important abilities when it comes to the game of soccer. It is obvious why speed is important in soccer: soccer is a fast-paced game. The more ability you have to keep up with the ball and outrun other players, the more likely you are to achieve big plays for your team. In soccer, you should develop your speed in both sprints and endurance runs. Another key skill to work on is agility. This will help you dodge other players, protect the goal, and make contact with the ball. Soccer training does not often focus on strength, but it is an area that will allow you to really help your team. It also gives you the energy and endurance you need to outlast other players on the field. As you work on training exercises to develop these three athletic traits, you will notice that your abilities and your statistics on the field will increase substantially.

Strength Development Exercises

When it comes to strength training, there are several exercises you can do for soccer. You do not have to reinvent the wheel; many typical strength training exercises used for any sport will help your soccer game. Focus on exercises that strengthen your leg muscles, but do not neglect sit-ups, push-ups, and weight training. There are also exercises you can do that are more tailored to necessary soccer abilities. One of the most important attributes a soccer player has on the field is stamina. You can develop this with running by using a sled or parachute to provide resistance as you run. Soccer players also need arm strength for maneuvering around obstacles, handling throw-ins, and tending the goal. You may find it useful to purchase a weighted ball to develop arm strength. These balls should not be used for kicking or heading.

Increasing Your Speed on the Soccer Field

Even if you are an incredibly strong or agile player, there is little you can do for your team on the soccer field if you have not developed your speed. There are hundreds of exercises you can do to increase your speed, and many of them allow you to work on agility as well. In addition to timing yourself as you run down a field or around a track, you can set up courses with hurdles, cones, arches, and ladders. You should work on speed exercises both with and without a soccer ball. As your speed increases, begin to add resistance tools to your speed training workout. Some of these tools include sleds, parachutes, and ankle speed bands. If you have a teammate to work with, try using mirror belts. They let you work on resistance, agility, and speed all at the same time. Developing strength with speed is valuable because soccer is as much an endurance game as it is a game of speed.
