Helping Soccer Players Avoid Dehydration

Even though soccer requires more energy than almost any other physical activity, not all players are careful about drinking enough water. Dehydration is dangerous, especially because in some of the more humid places of the world, you do not necessarily have to feel thirsty in order to be dehydrated. No matter where the game is played, soccer players inevitably lose a lot of water as they play the game. All players, especially young or new players, should be given every opportunity to stay hydrated. Parents and coaches have a responsibility to make sure players have access to water or other thirst-quenching beverages. Soccer players should also be educated on the symptoms of dehydration. Teaching soccer players to be more self-sufficient and aware of hydration issues will lead to less emergencies.

What to Focus on in Soccer Training

Soccer requires three fundamental skills: agility, speed, and strength. Speed is somewhat of an obvious skill, since soccer is a very fast-moving game. The more ability you have to keep up with the ball and outrun other players, the more likely you are to achieve big plays for your team. Soccer demands lots of fast spurts of speed within a general marathon-like running session, so develop your speed over both short and long distances. Agility is another crucial attribute to develop. Agility allows you to move around players, make contact with the ball even when it seems out of reach, and defend the goal. Though often overlooked, strength training is an area that will help you out-power your opponents. Strength training will also contribute to your overall endurance. Focusing on these three areas will allow you to be a threat on any soccer field.

Strength Training for Soccer

Strength is an important but overlooked area of soccer training. Be sure to implement it in your practices. First, take advantage of some of the same practices used for strength training across all sports. You can build strength by doing push-ups and sit-ups as well as weight lifting. Make sure to implement exercises that develop strength in your legs. There are also exercises you can do that are more tailored to necessary soccer abilities. Stamina is critical in soccer. Try using resistance tools, such as running sleds or parachutes, as you run. Soccer players also need arm strength for maneuvering around obstacles, handling throw-ins, and tending the goal. Weighted balls are available to help you develop your strength. They should not, however, be used for kicking or heading.

The Advantages of Scrimmage in Soccer Practice

A scrimmage can be valuable for all types of sports, and soccer is no different. No amount of drills can replace the lessons learned in practice games. When playing a scrimmage with your soccer team, make sure that you rotate your players between teams so as to avoid rivalries within your own team. Another benefit to the team as a whole is that scrimmages are great times to let players try and understand other soccer positions. Scrimmage can also build confidence for your players as they score goals for the first time, block passes, and practice all of their techniques in one match. The greatest advantage to a scrimmage is seeing your team's strengths and weaknesses play out. Coaches can even pause a scrimmage game, alert the team to a problem, and let them work on it for the duration of the game. Scrimmages are also less monotonous than repetitive drills for the players.
