3D modeling is the process of developing a mathematical, wireframe representation of any three-dimensional object (either inanimate or living) using specialized software. 3D models are used in a wide variety of fields like medicine, movies, science, architecture and engineering.

3D CAD Modeling , for instance, is used in the engineering industry to create 3D models of machine parts, in the automotive sector to create auto parts and miniature models, and in the architectural and construction industry to create models of projects, buildings and interiors. 3D modeling is also used to create models of the human body for medical education, emergency services training, researchers and artists.

The media also uses 3D models for animation films, advertisements etc. Since 3D models can be easily uploaded onto a web site, it is also possible to share it widely to people across geographies through the Internet.

3D Modeling is also used in maps to create three-dimensional graphic representations of surfaces. This is also known as a digital elevation model or a digital terrain model. These are useful for surface analysis.

3D CAD modeling has brought about huge improvements and efficiency in manufacturing. Companies can design prototypes and change them constantly in the virtual world, without going through the process of actually creating them and then alter them.

3D modeling has been a godsend for architects and builders. Now they can see how a building or project looks like on the computer without laying a single brick. There is no need to make costly alterations in the middle of project, and result is huge savings in time and money. Interior decorators can also plan optimum indoor spaces by using 3D modeling.

While many CAD users continue to use 2D modeling, the trend is towards 3D CAD modeling. The growing use of 3D models has made the CAD market more competitive. Clearly, there’s a bright future for 3D CAD modeling.
