Throw Away Your Keys and Say Hello to Keyless Entry

Say good-bye to clunky keychains and hidden emergency keys, with the new electronic deadbolt technology you can open your door with the press of a finger. These slick new units from Schlage are controlled by a keypad that can be automated from a computer or cell phone.

Throw away your keys and unlock your doors by entering a four-digit pass code. "Big deal", you say – "a key, a pass code, what's the difference?" Well, it does have its advantages. You can assign each family member a separate code, and then program the device to advise you via cell phone when your kids or spouse gets home. Assign a different number to your babysitter or housekeeper and later review a list of which codes were used to open the house and at which times.

You can also program the system to turn on house lights when the door is unlocked so that you never have to enter a dark house.

An average starter kit is about $299 plus $12.99 per month to communicate signals from the lock to cell phone or computer. This allows you to program up to 30 separate doors.

An alternative to the keypad entry system is the RFID or Radiofrequency ID electronic deadbolt. Simply push a button and wave a special card in front of the door to access entry.

An even higher tech electronic lock is accessed via the occupant's fingerprint. Not just for ultra-security corporations, these are becoming increasingly popular for residential use. It uses thermal sensors that detect if an actual person is applying the fingerprint. Some models have combination fingerprint and access code features. The Biometric fingerprint lock is the most popular version and identifies a person's unique fingerprint pattern by using a scanner. This is considered the only true keyless entry door lock.

After speaking to various people who use a Biometric lock, I heard many similar comments. The fingerprint only detects correctly in about one out of four attempts. There also seems to be a problem with the initial registering of the fingerprints, and some people claim they are unable to ever have their fingerprint detected.
