Try to quell your nerves as they can be contagious and remember that you want to convince your interviewer that you are personable rather than a bumbling wreck of nerves! The point of an interview is for the employer to get to know you and assess if you are suitable for the job, so when you think about your interviewer as a person rather than a monster it can make the process a little less daunting.

Do your research

Find out a little background on the company as it will help to prove how keen and dedicated you are. Also make sure you fully comprehend the role of the job that you are applying for and be prepared to explain why you are suitable for the job. The most worrying part for many during an interview is being asked questions on the spot that catch us off guard but if you know the basics about the company then you not only appear organised but you can be rest assured nothing can catch you out!

Prepare

Preparing for an interview is key to a successful outcome. Always make a mental or written note of a few questions that would be good to ask so you appear prepared and collected. Being organised is a good skill to have for whatever job you are applying for and questions can range from basic things about where you will be based and how big your team is to what hours you will be working and what the pay is.

Many interviews will contain the same questions to a point i.e. why do you want this job and what makes you think you are qualified for this job, so you can prepare to answer these questions before you step foot in the interview room. Think about your appearance and wear suitable clothing, not too smart if the job doesn’t require it and not too casual either. Even if you have already sent in your CV make sure you have a copy to hand during the interview and take certificates with you in a well presented folder.

What to say and what to avoid

Mud sticks and the first impressions that you make will be very telling to your interviewer. It is best to open the conversation with a smile to show you are open, confident and friendly and don’t dominate the conversation with fear of coming across too quiet as this can be off putting. Always speak politely, smile, be genuine as well as courteous and speak clearly. An interview is simply an aural way to sell yourself after successfully drawing in your potential employer with a well thought out CV.

Pull your interviewer in and make them interested about hiring you by showing you are committed to the job with your background knowledge of the company and talk about previous work experiences and goals. Always avoid any negative aspects of previous jobs and experiences and focus only on what will be of interest and relevance to them. Steer clear of personal questions during an interview and keep the conversation light and simple so as not to bore or over indulge your interviewer with details.

Above all, just be yourself and answer questions honestly and with a smile and you never know how much your personality may be able to win over a multitude of qualifications and a wealth of experience from other applicants.
