While veteran wearers of contact lenses are likely to go all day without giving their tiny vision correction devices a second though, new users might not be able to think about much of anything else. Getting used to wearing contact lenses can be quite a challenge, as it's simply not very intuitive to be sticking foreign objects into one's eyes. But with time, wearing contacts seems like less of a burden and more of a normal part of one's daily routine. In order to speed up the transition, here are 10 tips that any contact lens wearer can benefit from.

1. Always Wash Your Hands Before Handling Contacts - You may not think your hands are dirty, but your eyes are very sensitive, and even particles of dust that you cannot see can cause a lot of pain and irritation if transferred to your contact lenses. Even though you may not be touching your eyes directly, anything on your hands can easily find its way onto your lenses and into your eye.

2. Only Store Contacts in Solution ? All liquids are not created equal when it comes to contact lens care. Clean water may seem innocuous enough, but it won't have the sanitizing effect of the contact solution in which your lenses are designed to be stored. And it doesn't matter how long you're planning on storing your lenses ? it only takes a fraction of a second to contaminate your lenses.

3. Always Wash Your Lenses After Use ? Even though you're storing your lenses in solution immediately after removal, you should still clean them. After all, any foreign object that isn't taken off the surface of your lens probably won't wash off while sitting in solution. And if some sort of bacteria is on the lens, letting it ferment overnight in your case will only make things worse.

4. Never Use Your Nails ? There's no doubt about it ? contact lenses are difficult to handle. Even after a few weeks, trying to separate your contacts from the surface of your eyes can be a challenge. And because your nails provide a finer tip than that of your fingers, you may be tempted to use them. This is one urge you should definitely resist. Using your nails can scratch your lenses or worse, your eyes. After a few weeks of experience, your fingers will be quite nimble.

5. Always Change Your Solution Completely ? If you notice that the amount of solution in your case appears to be low, don't simply ?top off? the solution by adding more. If the solution has been in use long enough to spill out, it has been in use long enough to collect dirt and impurities. Adding solution won't wash those out, so empty the case completely and refill.

6. Always Carry A Spare Set ? Nothing is worse than being away from home and losing a contact, only to find you don't have a backup. Disaster can strike at any time, so always be prepared.

7. Limit Contact Lens Wear to Eight Hours ? Sure, your day may be longer than eight hours, but your contacts just aren't designed for that kind of abuse. Excessive wear may damage contacts and will dry out your eyes, neither of which you want.

8. Keep Your Solution Sanitary ? One commonly overlooked part of contact lens safety is care for your bottle of solution. Because solution issues from the tip of the bottle, make sure it is kept clean and in a safe place, away from dirt, dust, makeup, and other contaminants. If something does get on it, clean it thoroughly or get a new bottle.

9. Don't Sleep In Your Contacts ? No matter how long you plan on sleeping, remove your contacts before you fall asleep. Ideally, you should take out your contacts if you are feeling drowsy, even if you don't plan on going to sleep. This will prevent waking up with dry lenses and sore eyes.

10. Don't Give Up On Contacts ? Don't get discouraged if you have difficulty with your contacts ? everyone has been there! What seems impossible now will be automatic once you get used to your lenses, and you'll wonder why you waited so long to get them.
