Cleaning and organizing your home is perhaps one of the easiest tasks there is. Just before company arrives, you can shove everything into the closet where it can be forgotten. After all, if you cannot see the mess then it does not exist, right?

Unfortunately, there comes a time, or many times, in everyone’s life when the closet stops being a place for clothes and coats and turns into a mass graveyard of old shoes and other assorted junk. If your closet is large enough then this behavior can go for months, sometimes even years on end. Unless you plan to play musical chairs with all your junk, constantly moving it from room to room, the time has come for you to be rid of it once and for all. Since this can often times seem like a daunting task, you can unclutter your closet and never have to worry about it getting disorganized again with the following tips:

Tip 1: Drag it Out

Examining the space is the very first thing that must happen if you will ever get on the right track. Although it may sound like a lot of work, and in truth, it can be, you will always be fighting a losing battle with your closet until you give in and drag it all out. Much of what you pull out will end up back inside, but it still needs to come out so you can see exactly what has been building up in there, stealing all your space.

If you are like most people then you will find an array of objects that have no business in the closet. For instance, does that box of old wire coat hangers really need to be in the hall closet? Is there a purpose to keeping your old cookware in the bedroom closet? Unless you love hangers and you do most of your meal preparation in the closet, chances are you did not mean to put those items in there in the first place.

Tip 2: Clean it Up

It is important to keep in mind that not everything you pull out of the closet is going to fit you. In this regard, cleaning out your closet can easily become a time to face facts; you are not exactly the same size that you were six years ago. If all of your clothes fit then you perfectly than you would not be in the situation you find yourself in now. This is nothing to be embarrassed or humiliated about as it has or eventually will happen to all of us at some point.

Now is the time to take stock of each item and make a decision on what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. If it has a purpose, and not an “eventually I will use it” purpose, then it should be put up somewhere accessible for later use. Without fail, you will find all sorts of things that you probably do not want to keep and should throw them out right away unless they are in good enough condition to be donated or sold. When this process is complete, you should find that you have much more space.

Tip 3: Spruce it Up

Since you might not have everything dragged out again, take this opportunity to give the closet itself a thorough cleaning. Remember, clean spaces always seem much bigger than dirty ones. Just because you have a modest or small closet to work with does not mean that you should let it become cluttered and cramped.

Next, consider the items going back inside. Was part of the problem that pile of shoes covering the floor? Add either a freestanding shoe rack or over the door shoe rack. Better yet, get a holder that slides under the bed to get them out altogether. Do you have too many clothes and not enough hanger space? Pick up some closet extenders. Once your clothes are hanging in layers, you will be amazed at how much can fit inside of your closet. Of course, if not everything hanging is in season, fold them away in vacuum space saver bags until the time comes when you need them.

Tip 4: Stay Ahead of the Situation

The last step comes after everything in the closet has been reorganized and is often the most difficult. You must face the fact that your closet did not become a cluttered mess on its own. It had a little, no, make that a lot of help from you. Unless you like reorganizing your closet every few months, it is time for a change in your messy ways. So the next time you consider tossing your shoes onto the closet floor, just think ahead about all of the fun you will be missing out on during the time you have to spend reorganizing it.
