By: R Kalpana Click author's name for more of his/her articles

What do you think? Do collagen and elastin products work? If you are confused, you are not alone.

There are many people who do not know what to believe when it comes to collagen and elastin. The cosmetic or skin care company will tell you they do.

Have you tried one or more of these products and saw no change whatsoever? This is what skin care and cosmetic companies do - they come out with many new products every year.

In this sea of products, it is hard to know what to use and what is just a ploy to make the company money. If you do a little research you will be better equipped to make the right decision on what type of product you need.

So, what you need to know is "Do collagen and elastin products work?" Yes, they will work if they are the right types.

This does not include the topical creams made of these products. These will not penetrate all the layers of skin needed to penetrate to get where they could do any good.

Underneath all the layers of skin is where collagen and elastin do the job needed to keep skin from becoming wrinkled. This supply begins to thin as we age and if it can be stimulated to pick back up and produce more again, the skin will become softer and smoother.

How does this work? The real results are shown when we use products containing keratin proteins.

These proteins, which by the way make up a large percentage of your skin, cause other cells to stimulate the areas where collagen and elastin are made. This in turn will take care of the tissue on your face and cause it to strengthen.

When this happens, lines and wrinkles magically disappear. It is like going back in time several years.

Clinical studies have been conducted testing these products to see how much they would help the skin. There are results showing increases in both skin elasticity and the ability of the skin to retain moisture.

Of these products there are also other beneficial ingredients that help the skin to fight aging. Antioxidants are great at fighting free radicals that damage skin and help your body fight off illness and disease.

When you can use a product that does all this and more, why would you use a product that is not proven to help? The choice seems to be quite clear if you want younger, healthier looking skin.

If the choice is this clear, why do people buy the other products? For one, they have not thoroughly researched the types of products to see what they contain.

For another, even if they know what they contain, they need to know what each ingredient does in terms of repairing skin. The use of a product just because the bottle or jar says it works is not a good reason to rely on it for something this important.

In effect, you could be using something that is harmful to your skin. Now that you know this, what is your answer to "Do collagen and elastin products work?"
