This always a tough one to deal with. How to start something that you do not know really exists. Increasing your production, getting more done, accomplishing more in less time, these are all goals we want to obtain. How we go about achieving those puts us in no mans land. Let's map out an initial plan.

Lay the Proper Foundation

Before you can attack your production issues, you have to make sure that you are doing the right activities at the right time. This skill is not related to activities but to the positioning of those activities in your schedule. The positioning of those activities is a function of Time Management skills. Trying to work on getting more done in the day is counter productive if the very activities that you're doing are not the ones you should be doing at all. One of the reasons people are not accomplishing as much as they should in a day is because they are disorganized, have poor direction, lack focus and are generally running around responding to outside forces instead of driving there own agenda.

Your production will increase and you will be getting better results only when you are confident that what you are doing is what's best for you and will enable you to achieve your goals and aspirations. That can only be achieved when you are in charge, organized and following your own agenda. Get your time under control first; lay the proper foundation on which you can then start to work on getting more done of the right things at the right time.

Proper Head Set

This is a tough one to convey to people, perhaps more because my lack of eloquence than anything else. Unless your head is around paying attention to production issues, you will have a hard time getting results in this area. One of the reasons all us do not get more done in the day is because we are too busy, we try to cram too much into the day and we get side tracked off doing the really important things. This general disorganization leads us to getting poor results. Part of the process to getting more done is taking our time, get properly set up, spending the required time to do the pr planning required to ensure we are ready to get maximum production out of the time invested in doing what ever task we set out to do.

It's a Catch 22 situation. We don't get as much done as we should because we don't spend that little extra time that is required to make sure we are ready and in position to do our best work. What came first, the poor production or the poor use of our time? This is the dilemma that constantly plagues us all, the elusive balance we need to achieve in order to be success, how we use out time and mastering this skill in order to allow us to reach our full potential.

The Never-ending Search Begins

If you really want to get better results, get more done in less time and to continually increase your effectiveness, start the search today and never stop it. The search that I'm refer to is the search to always get better at what you do and to continually look for ways to be better, faster and more efficient at whatever you do. That is the corner stone of increasing your production and getting more done each and every day. When you stop that search, that's when your increases in production stop and that's when the slide down the slippery slope of mediocrity accelerates.

The most frustrating aspect of working with people regarding productivity issues is the fact that the majority of people do not seem to care about how things are done. As long as the job gets done, there is little or no regard for either how long it took or the end results. This lack of caring goes hand in hand with poor production. There is a direct connection between poor performance and a general lack of caring about the end results.

If you want to get better results, start to be aware of what you are now doing, how you are doing it and ways to do it better. Start now and never stop searching.

Start with Small Tasks

It's a big mountain to climb, one that has no top. You want to get some small success early on in the game. The best way to do that is to start with small tasks that you can get a handle on quickly and show some progress. Start with something you do often, something that you can re tool and re do in a faster more efficient manner that will require a small amount of planning and preparation to enable you to shave some time off the task.

A favorite trick I use to increase how much I can get done of a certain job is to look at the layout of the job site. What can I do to increase production by simply better organizing the space, the tools, the movement of the people and products within the work zone? Just a little time in pre planning some of these factors will almost always lead to increase efficiencies.
