Science has shown us how we can now modify our brain waves to reduce stress. When you have electrodes attached to your head they can read the electrical signal that are emitted by your brain all the time. They form a consistent pattern at a certain frequency known as the brain wave. The frequency of your so-called brain wave varies during the course of a normal day, slower at night, faster in the middle of the day.

If you've ever wondered at what makes you feel different in the middle of the night when you are woken form a deep sleep to when you get woken by a gentle ray of sunshine on your pillow, it's the dominant brain wave that you're experiencing.

Most of our time asleep we are in delta brain wave, this is where we dream and have REM sleep. At various times during the night we drop into a theta state, which is slower and has quite a few very different effects compared to the delta level. Alpha is the state where we are alert and focused, this is often associated with effective learning. Beta is the level that most people spend much of their time in and it's awake but not particularly alert and often is predisposed to being stressed and anxious.

You're probably wondering what any of this has to do with stress and meditation. Well, research performed on monks and others that achieve deep states of meditation, has show that they can reach theta level of brain wave activity while they are still awake. Something that not many of us ever get to experience. Usually we are asleep long before our brain reaches such as low level of activity.

Shows us that we can essentially meditate at a very deep level, if we can alter our brain waves to a particular level.

So what sort of things influences our brain waves? Well there's actually a whole lot of naturally occurring things that have an effect that we aren't necessarily even aware of. Certain sounds and tones can influence us as can light levels, think of a peaceful sunset on the beach compared to the bustle of midday in the middle of the city. There's a frequency (beta) that has been long associated with stress and anxiety if we spend too long in that range, does this sound like you?

Brain Wave Frequency Summary

over 40 Hz Gamma waves

Higher mental activity, including perception, problem solving, fear, and consciousness

13 - 40 Hz Beta waves

Active, busy or anxious thinking and active concentration, arousal, cognition

7 - 13 Hz Alpha waves

Relaxation (while awake), pre- sleep and pre-wake drowsiness

4 - 7 Hz Theta waves

Dreams, deep meditation, REM sleep

under 4 Hz Delta waves

Deep dreamless sleep, loss of body awareness

Baroque style music has long been known to put the brain waves into an alpha state, which is highly beneficial for studying. This is caused by our brains inclination to get in synch with a rhythm that it hears. A rhythmic beat will have the same effect.

However, with modern research and audio technology, we can now safely and effectively modify our brain waves through the use of what's called binaural audio. What this means, is that a certain tone is played into one ear and a very slightly different tone is played into the other. The effect of these tones is to affect the brain waves and either slow them down or speed them up depending on the specifics of the sound being used.

So if you're having an ultra stressful day at work, you can now put some headphones on and automatically sink into a deep meditative state and when you're done you'll be ready to deal with the rest of the day easily. Even better though is that with regular use of this type of audio program, you'll be less stressed all the time. I hope this sounds as good to you as it does to me!

Using meditation and binaural audio to modify your brain waves and reduce your stress is something that just about everyone would benefit from. In our fast paced world today, we all need something to give us back the balance that we've lost along the way. Utilize technology for your own benefit, live life to the full and enjoy every moment of it.
