As you know, smoking is terrible for your health. Warnings have been on smoke packs for ages and yet, people who smoke do not appear to realize there is much truth in them. Cigarettes hold nicotine, the addictive drug which makes people want to smoke. In addition, cigarettes also contain thousands of chemicals that are adverse to the body. While smoking is adverse to smokers in general, it poses further health hazards to those with diabetes. Smoking increases their risk of complications brought about by diabetes such as heart attack and stroke.

Here are some tips to help those who want to kick the smoking habit.

1. Get ready - Many people who try to quit fail because they aren't committed to quitting. Even if they use medication or therapy in their efforts, if they aren't really ready to quit they probably won’t make it. You should set a date and stick to it. Get your friends and family to help motivate you.

2. Avoid temptation - Throw away all your smoking materials. When you take breaks at work you should substitute a drink or snack break for your usual smoke break. Try spending more time with your non-smoking friends. Avoid areas where people smoke. It will help curb temptation, as well as, protect you from second-hand smoke.

3. Stay busy - Do things with your hands whenever possible. This will help you curb the need to hold a cigarette. There are plenty of things you can do to keep your mind and body busy so you don't need to smoke.

4. Eat right - You should always try to eat a well-balanced diet whether you're trying to quit smoking or not. Eating well will make you feel better and that, in turn, can help alleviate some of your withdrawal symptoms.

5. Get professional help - Sometimes it is difficult to do things on our own. If you're having trouble trying to quit, perhaps you need to get assistance from a qualified doctor. Whether you need a prescription drug or just therapy, assistance from a doctor can ease the burden of 'going it alone'.

6. Try to relax - If you are constantly stressed, it is more difficult to give up the habit. You might want to take up Yoga or find a way to learn meditation.

7. Avoid or reduce alcohol consumption - Many smokers tend to smoke more when they drink. Some non-smokers will smoke only when they drink. Therefore, it only makes sense that if you are trying to quit, an avoidance of alcohol can only be a positive.

8. Never take prescription medicine without a doctor's advice - Even if you can buy some stop smoking aids over the counter, you should still consult your physician to be safe.
