Maintenance and care for fountains need not be that complicated. To keep your fountains looking beautiful for years to come here are some tips to help you maintain your fountains' looks and functions.

). Use quality water - it is advisable to use a good quality of water like distilled water, however there are products available to treat tap water so you would not need to buy distilled water for your fountain. Good water helps preserve the pump. Mineral deposits can stain and leave marks on the fountain after some time. The correct level of water in the reservoir must be maintained every day.

). Water Capacity - aside from the quality of the water, it is also important to note that proper water capacity is also a key in preventing problems in your water fountain. Your water fountain should not be left dry or overflowing. Ideally, water level should be kept below the rim.

). Clean the pump regularly - a sign that the pump is not working efficiently is when the water is not being pumped at the expected rate. Dirt buildup and algae may cause these little problems. Cleaning the pump thoroughly once every two or three months will make it last longer.

). Use the right products to clean the fountain - it is best to use products developed specifically for cleaning water fountains. Water treatments should be your number one priority as it helps to prevent the build-up of mineral deposits which can damage the surface of many water fountains.

). Clean the whole fountain periodically - once every three months or so, clean your fountain thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. This is done simply by emptying all the water and wiping out the inside part of the fountain. Sometimes a little scrubbing is needed.

). Follow the instructions manual' because there are a lot of water fountain models, each of these have their own instruction manual for proper care and maintenance. A simple reading of the material that comes with your water fountain will benefit you for a long time.

). Keep them empty during winter - this is important for people who live in areas where temperature falls below zero during the winter season. The frozen water can damage your fountain as the water expands.

). Keep the leaves and branches away - while it may look more natural for your water fountain to have branches and leaves thrown into it, these materials however decomposes and can cause unpleasant smell.

). Don't let the children pound on it - because children would love to play with anything and everything, your water fountain will not be excused from their curiosity. However, for security reason it is best to give instructions to children not to pound on the water fountain as it can topple over and hurt them.

). Lastly remember that different materials require different care - water fountains are made from different materials such as copper, acrylic or stainless steel. Not all cleaning methods may be applicable to all kinds of water fountains.

Everybody loves water fountains because of the benefits we derive from them. The sight and sound of the moving water makes us drift into daydreams, makes us relax and enjoy its serene elegance. A little maintenance will go a long, long way.
