Glycerine comes from the Greek word “glykys” which means sweet. This clear, odorless, and sweet substance is a by-product of the process of making biodiesel as well as soaps. This substance has certain characteristics that make it an important household item in itself and in the manufacture of other household products.

One practical value of the substance is that it can be used to remove those spilled sticky food glued to your freezer. You can remove those spills by wiping it off with a rag dabbed with the substance. You can also produce a homemade soap as long as you have glycerine and a microwave. What you can do is melt several blocks of glycerine in a glass container using your microwave set at half-power. At this point, you may add drops of scents or color dye. Then pour the melted product into soap molds, or any molds of different shapes, and let it harden for about 30 minutes. Another domestic use of the substance is that it is added to cakes and other baked goods, candies, and dry food products in order to moisten and sweeten them.

There are also many household products that have glycerine as one of their components. Examples are soaps, hand creams, toothpaste, and mouthwashes. It is specifically used in the manufacture of soaps and lotions because it tends to attract moisture to the skin. Thus, people with eczema or an itching skin inflammation with crusted lesions may find relief from the substance. It helps make the skin have its own natural moisture again. It softens and allows the skin to breathe at the same time. One characteristic of the substance that is responsible for its being a moisturizer is its being “hygroscopic” or it absorbs water from the air.

Other cosmetic products where it is found include deodorants, pre-shaving lotions, lipstick, make up, and mascara. It is also valuable in the manufacture of several drugs such as cough remedies, anesthetics, suppositories, capsules, lozenges, and ear infection remedies.

Besides being a component of many household products, it is also useful in many other ways. In the textile industry, for instance, it is used to soften the yarn as well as lubricate fibers of various kinds. It is also used in the tobacco industry. While it is used to make cigarette filter tips, it also adds flavor to the chewing tobacco. Its value to the paper industry, on the other hand, is that it softens and reduces the shrinkage while paper is being manufactured. Another common use is in the production of explosives just like dynamites. It is actually turned into nitroglycerine, which is an essential chemical in making explosives.

It is also used

• in the manufacture of resin coating
• as a building block in manufacturing flexible foams
• to add flexibility to plastic and rubber
• to preserve scientific specimens
• as an anti-freeze
• to de-congest nasal passages
• as a mild laxative
• to soften and remove calluses
• as a drink for stamina (for some long-distance runners)

It is undeniable that glycerine has so many things to offer. Isn’t it great that what could have been considered as waste has so much to offer? Its use does not end in various manufacturing industries and that’s what is so good about this sweet chemical substance. It in itself can be considered as a household item. While you can apply your resourcefulness and creativity by making homemade soaps out of it, you can also use it to remove those unwanted spills from your freezer. And, you can make the most out of its benefits by getting yourself informed about it.
