What are the different types of Acne - How do you treat them???

By: Michele Bucci

For anyone who suffers from acne or just has a break-out every now and then - it is important to be able to tell the difference AND know how to deal with the various types of acne.

WHITEHEADS:
Whiteheads happen when the pore is blocked, trapping oil, bacteria and dead skin cells within. This causes the white appearance on the surface of the skin.

Using a product with benzoyl peroxide will work underneath the skin's surface. Using a light rubbing action with a clean cloth can remove what is visible on the outer layer of skin. Do NOT squeeze.

BLACKHEADS:
Blackheads appear when a pore is partially blocked. Therefore only some of the oil, bacteria and dead skin cells drain to the surface of the skin. The black color is a reaction of the skin's pigment to the oxygen in the air - it is NOT dirt.

Blackheads are known to be very stubborn to remove. The best bet is to exfoliate the skin on a regular basis. This will help remove the dead skin cells from the top layer of skin which will keep the pores clean. If this does not help, extractions can be done - however it is best to have an esthetician or dermatologist perform the task. Many people are quick to use their fingers to extract - which can actually damage the skin - if performed the wrong way - the bacteria can be pushed deeper into the skin causing an infection. An esthetician should use an extractor - a special tool used to give even pressure around a pore.

PUSTULES:
Pustules are similar to whiteheads. The difference is that they appear inflamed and red - usually with a yellow center. Again a benzoyl peroxide product works well to clear the skin.

PAPULES:
Papules are also inflamed, red, bumps but with no yellow/white center. These can not be squeezed.

It is best to leave papules alone and allow them to finish their course.

NODULES:
Nodules consist of large, hard bumps under the surface of the skin which usually affects large areas of the face. This type of acne can be very painful and last for months. Scarring is very common and squeezing should not be attempted.

A visit to a dermatologist is almost always the answer to dealing with this type of acne.

CYSTS:
Cysts are similar to nodules, but are pus-filled and very large. These too can be very painful. Scarring is also common with cystic acne and again, squeezing will most likely result in the cysts lasting longer and being more painful.

A visit to a dermatologist is almost always the answer to dealing with this type of acne.
