Wheelchairs -- A Guide To Independence

By: Fred Jackson Click author's name for more of his/her articles

Someone very close to me was in the midst of hard times. Because of her declining health she seemed to be distracted, and depressed lately. Actually if I were to loose the ability to do basic things in life, stuff like getting to the post office, or even going to get the mail, I think I'd be a little down too.

If this sounds familiar, trust me when I say that there's hope. It doesn't matter whether you're overweight, have a medical condition, or just that you've gotten a little older, if you do what she did, you'll feel back to your old self again. She'll vouch for that.

It didn't happen overnight, but once she accepted that she had to have a wheelchair, that was the first step (no pun intended). It was like admitting defeat. It would be like admitting that her disease had won if she were to get a wheelchair. I encouraged her to check into it anyway, so we did together. We went online and checked out all that was available. Her whole attitude about owning a wheelchair was starting to change.

We found more than what we were looking for right away, from jazzy wheelchairs to lightweight wheelchairs, to mobility power chairs, there wasn't much we didn't find. They were REALLY nice! They looked great, and they had a lot of features. The more she looked at what was available, and what accessories you could get with it, my friend became more and more interested. After looking at all of the motorized wheelchairs, we finally decided the best would be the jazzy wheelchair. She picked her favorite color for the body of the chair and added the accessories she wanted most, like a cupholder and a basket on the front to carry her things. The seat and handles were ergonomically designed for ultimate comfort.

When her chair finally was delivered, she had to make some adjustments. After some trial and error, she finally became comfortable with how to use it. After some time, she got really good at it and now she's a pro.

If she hadn't done this, who knows where she'd be now. Her life has improved dramatically with her new found freedom.
