Why Building Positive Self Esteem During A Child's Formative Years Is Crucial

In these harsh times, many around the world are suffering from self doubt and a low sense of self worth. The feeling of insignificance is pervasive, especially in a time when job security is the number one concern amongst most adults. Providing for children and paying the bills have become a struggle for most parents as they struggle through a time when fears of retrenchments and pay cuts reign supreme. It is because of this very reason that parents no longer seem to have the time to mould their children's mind and assist them in their formative years to develop into well-adjusted, healthy, and happy adults.
What many don't seem to realise however is the importance of building positive self esteem during a child's formative years. This article will endeavour to enlighten readers on this crucial aspect of a child's development.
The thing parents should always be aware of is the interaction that children are exposed to. Children tend to be insensitive, especially so in their formative years because they have no clue as to the effects of their words upon others.
As a parent, you should always be concerned about what is being said to your child from his or her friends, and ensure that the things being said do not end up scarring your child's psyche permanently.
As a parent you can prevent this from happening through positive reinforcement and encouragement, and dismissing the harsh things that might have been said to the child. You should explain how your child should not take negativity and harsh words to heart in order to prevent the development of a negative belief system in them.
Apart from being aware of what your child hears from his or her interactions with friends, you should also monitor other input your child receives, especially from television. Take a good look at your television today and you will see that the horrors of everyday life is easily accessible these days.
From the news alone you will be able to see some of the atrocities occurring in the world today, and when a child is exposed to real world events at such an early age, the negativity that he or she witnesses contributes greatly to the belief system that they eventually develop.
Without proper guidance and prevention of the development of such belief systems, the child will eventually develop into someone with a negative mindset about the world around him or her and life in general. While a child does not deliberately do this, the negative impact of witnessing such horrific events (such as war and terrorism or even natural disasters) can cause a negative impact upon the subconscious and the subsequent perspective of the world at large.
As parents it is your responsibility to enforce a positive attitude to counter against the negativity that your children may witness, if you are concerned over the state of mind that they end up having as adults.
To build positive self esteem in children is simple. Commend on a job well done, give them a spontaneous hug, encourage them whenever they show signs of self doubt, practically anything that brings a smile to a child's face would be enough to foster a healthy, positive mindset for our future generations to come.
