Why You Should Home Shop Before Remodeling

If you are considering a large remodeling project for your home, you've probably also considered moving. When the contractor gives you a price estimate, you might wonder if you can find a new home that will fill your needs at a similar price as the remodel. Whether you decide to stay or move, home shopping is an important step.

There are a few reasons you should look at new homes. One reason is that it lets you know what is out there. While looking at magazines and catalogs can give you some ideas, you can come up with many more by looking at real homes on the market. This will allow you to visualize the space much better than just looking at pictures. If you look at homes, you'll likely come up with several new ideas for remodeling as you see all the new features and designs modern homes have. You might even come up with a more affordable way to redesign your home to give you what you want.

Going home shopping will also allow you to have a realistic view of costs. While a large remodeling project may seem expensive, moving tends to be more so. Start by comparing the costs of the remodel with the costs of a new home that has all the features that you want. Consider the floor plan, the lot size, and the neighborhood. Also consider the hidden costs of moving. It's unlikely that you will be able to sell your home as is for a premium price. There are likely repairs that need to be made before the house can sell or you would need to make an allowance for repairs, which will affect the amount of money you can get for a home.

If you are considering moving, you'll also need to think about the neighborhood. If you have school age children, you'll probably want to restrict your search to houses within the same school district so that they won't have to change schools. You'll also want to consider your work commute and the convenience of your home to shopping centers and other desirous locations. If you are happy with where your home is, you'll probably find it is more affordable to remodel than it is to move to a place that meets all your requirements.

Of course, in some cases moving does make more sense. One thing that determines housing prices is the neighborhood. If you are planning a major renovation it is possible that you will be wasting your money because you won't be able to raise the price of your home to reflect the changes that you make. Another reason you might want to move is for space issues, or if you would be able to move to a more desirable location for a similar price to the remodel.

All of these things must be considered before you start to remodel your home. Because if this, it makes sense to look at houses for sale so that you aren't starting a new project blindly.
