If you are overweight and have made the decision to do something about it you need to understand the difference between losing fat and losing weight. Most diet programs are sold because they claim you will lose a large amount of weight usually in short period of time. To sell these products and make money be aware that they are only telling you half the truth by capitalizing on what you assume.

They know that most people assume that when they lose weight they are burning body fat so they go along with that notion. But these slick sales people are talking about water weight not about actually losing body fat.

When you see the bathroom scales going down you will definitely mistakenly think you are losing body fat. In essence you are dehydrating yourself, and approximately 75% of the weight lost on the scale is water instead of fat.

When you drop your calorie level too much carbohydrates and protein (stored in the muscles) are used as an energy source, your body will lose water weight because both carbohydrates and protein hold water in the cells. Something way more serious also happens to your body, your metabolism drops - which is the rate your body burns fuel.

So if your goal is to lose body fat the last thing you need is a smaller metabolic engine. By forcing your body into starvation mode you are teaching it to store every available calorie it can as body fat as it doesn't know when it is going to get enough food again.

This is totally the opposite of what you need to do if you wish to have a lean, strong, slim and healthy body. You need to learn the skills necessary to crank your metabolism up and burn off the unwanted body fat not try and starve it off.

Let's summarize here: Not eating enough calories results in muscle tissue loss, dehydration and slower fat burning. Even worse your body will always adapt to a lower calorie intake so, if you can't maintain that lower calorie intake for the rest of your life, you will gain all of the weight back when you get tired of starving yourself.

A much easier and more effective way to lose excess body fat is to use the number one method to rev up your metabolic engine. This is to perform a proper exercise program that contains at least 60% strength training exercise. Toned muscle is the furnace where body fat is burned so toning up your muscle tissue is the key to losing body fat.

Make sure you get the right help from a fitness professional to get your program set up properly, learn correct exercise technique and to learn the correct level of intensity to perform your exercises at. Your program should include exercises that work multiple muscle groups together.

Without exercise you may lose some weight (very little fat and lots of muscle tissue) but it will only produce a softer, smaller flabbier version of what you are now. We now know that diets don't work and among many reasons why is the fact that people have a hard time getting lean and slim because they think that losing weight is the same as losing body fat.

Well now you know this isn't true, fat loss and weight loss is not the same thing. Put your focus on your strength training program eat small nutritious meals and you will burn body fat fast thanks to your increased metabolism.
