Many of us do not feel we have a good working knowledge of what it takes to maintain good health and feel it is out of our control. We have always been encouraged to remain 'doctor dependant' so we rely on them to cure us when we are ill. But in case you haven't noticed, thing are changing and we now need to take care of our body and accept some responsibility to its condition and wellness.

The average person is interested in living a long and healthy life yet they continue to put themselves at risk of 'modern lifestyle diseases' that could well cut their life short. When the body arrives at sickness it hasn't just happened. It likely has been smoldering away for years or even decades. The sickness state signals a fore warning that change is necessary.

The modern villains we call 'lifestyle disease' like heart disease, cancer and diabetes strike prematurely and are totally preventable so it makes good sense to do what ever it takes to avoid becoming a victim. Taking care of your health is an accumulation of daily habits and is something that must be maintained on a daily basis. Why wait until we are sick to do something about it? What if it is too late?

The number one thing that is in your control and will disease proof your body is to maintain your level of strength throughout your life. By keeping your body strong you also keep your immune system strong as you want it to be in top shape to detect and fight disease invaders.

Your level of strength is one of the main pillars of your health. If you are not doing enough muscle building and maintaining exercise you are simply asking for trouble somewhere down the track. A strength training program is not an 'optional' extra it is in fact a necessity if you want to live a long and healthy life.

There is simply not enough of the vigorous activity that we used to call manual 'work' left in our lives. Most of us get through each day without having to do anything that even vaguely resembles the level of activity that is needed to keep us healthy.

Our body relies on the signals we give it and if we want to stay strong and healthy then we need to be using our strength constantly to give our body the signal that it needs to stay strong. The flip side to this is that if we do not get enough vigorous physical activity our strength just dwindles away like an old aging engine that has lost its power.

This ebbing strength is because we lose muscle tissue at the rate of one half pound each year from the mid 20's and accelerates as the years go by. After age 50 this rate of muscle loss doubles. We used to blame the aging process but now we know different. It is simply because our modern day lives area devoid of any meaningful physical activity.

You do not have to go down this path. All you need to do is a couple of strength training sessions each week. Just make sure you get your program set up properly by a fitness professional so that you will receive the maximum benefits from it.

Starting a new, active, healthier lifestyle is something you do for yourself and you can liken it to making an investment in the future. This investment will ensure firstly that you get to see the last third of your life, and secondly, that you spend this last third actively doing what you like.
