Despite the bad press surrounding online security, as long as you know what to look for then you should be fine. Keep your wits about you and you will be fine when shopping online.

It might be approaching Christmas or your daughter's birthday and you are wanting to buy jewellery online. You know that there is a much better selection online and there is the chance to save money. So, what is it putting you off? It's the payment part. However, there really is no need to be wary of paying online for jewellery goods, or any other item you see and like, because it is fair to say that the vast majority of websites offer secure payment procedures and you wont run the risk of any card fraud.

The first thing to check is the website. Does it look professional? If there are obvious things missing on it like some pictures aren't showing up or the content doesn't make much sense then this could be a bad sign. When it comes to jewellery, you would expect the website to ooze professionalism and look really striking, complementing the company's wares. There should be detailed descriptions and pictures on the jewellery site and if you are given the opportunity to meet some of the team either via photos or suchlike, then this is a really positive sign. This shows that the business isn't afraid to show you who they are.

Look out for the padlock appearing next to the URL when heading through to the checkout section. It verifies security and gives the customer extra reassurance of security. It is a much more pleasant shopping experience when the company is reputable that you are buying from. The problem is, many customers feel wary of online businesses because they can't always see them in the flesh. Indeed, many online jewellery stores simply don't have a high-street shop, but this doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with them. In fact, in most cases it just shows that the company is trying to reduce its overheads by solely trading online, thus being able to pass on better savings to you when it comes to your jewellery purchase. As long as you can find out more about the company you're buying from then you can feel confident that your payment should be protected.

So, if you plan to buy jewellery online, it's a case of being vigilant as opposed to being wary of online stores - when you know what you're looking for in terms of web security then you won't have a problem.
