  • A Patio Dream Comes True  By : Mel Smithen
The patio, alongside the garden, is an integral part of your house, if you think hard about it. How is that possible, you may ask? Well, the answer is downright simple, really. The first part of your house that guests (especially potential spouse or even scarier, in-laws) will get to view and later on judge is obviously, the patio, as it is outdoor. Sometimes, the patio becomes a tricky business when guests quickly formulate an overview of the entire house based on it, even before they step into the house itself. Hence, knowing how much patio contributes to the image of your house, and to a certain extent, your efficiency as a housekeeper, here are some guidelines for an easy and quick makeover of your dusty and bird-dropping splattered patio.

    Concept
Most houses have very minimal space for the patio, normally accommodating up to 10 people. Due to this small space, the best concept to adopt is possibly the minimalist approach to make it appear larger. By using this scheme, your patio will be a cozy and spacious place at home.

    Furniture
After deciding on the concept, you can now start planning for the furniture. For your small space, using a minimalist approach is ideal but take note of a few important rules to follow to make the concept work:

1.For a small space, medium sized furniture is what you should opt for such as medium size rattan or wicker furniture. Large furniture will crowd your already small area while small ones would make it appear too bare. This type of furniture would go well with the outdoor environment of your patio. There are so many furniture that you can put at the patio and a good kind of example is a rocking and two small chairs and table. Don't just copy this idea. It's more fun to select your own and mix and match the furniture according to your fancy. Just to provide you with a brief list of what furniture will suit a patio like a Japanese table, rattan chest, coffee table and a sofa or a settee. You can shop for the furniture at stores or online.

    2. To safe space, you can also select furniture that functions as storage units. Something simple like a rattan chest helps store toys or reading materials as well as become a coffee table. This will definitely add class and style to your patio.

    3. When choosing outdoor cushions, try to opt for the ones made from water-resistant materials. Not only will the process of cleaning it up a breeze, you will be less threatened by the possibility of spills and even rain. Now, you can have that barbeque you always wanted to have and if there's ketchup everywhere on the cushions, just hose them away with water.

Patio Knick-Knacks: Patio Umbrella and Hammock
What happens if your patio is without a roof? Simple, you could be more adventurous and add a patio umbrella and a hammock to your patio. The formula to have these two things last is similar to the one of the outdoor cushions: get those made from water-resistant materials. The material is not just tolerant to rainwater, but is also easy to be cleaned up. However, another thing that should be added when choosing patio umbrella and hammock is sun-tolerant fabric. Since these items are going to be exposed to the hot sun as well, it is sensible for one to get a fabric that will get faded as a result of the hot sun. With the right selection of fabric, you will not have to buy new patio umbrella and hammock for a long long time.

    Patio Knick-Knacks: Patio Heaters
Patio are usually fully utilized during summer or spring. Why let that be the case? You can use you patio throughout the year by having your patio equipped with a patio heater. There are a few types that you can go for namely the standing heater, ceiling heater and portable heater. Families with small children can go for ceiling heaters for it is portable and less dangerous than the other two. Think about the source of fuel such as propane, natural gas, infrared and electric before you go scouting for one.

Why not go ahead and start your weekend patio project? The end result will be satisfying and you will be pleased that you now have a great place to hang out at home. Follow the guidelines and simple rules and you're on your way to creating your own little garden heaven.
