Different Types of Internet Connection
Analog
Analog internet connection is popularly known as internet dial-up access. This type of internet connection is very affordable but is also slow that operates at a minimum of 2400 bps to 56 Kbps. Users of this type of connection utilize the modem in their computer, which dials the number provided by its Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the Internet. Data is transmitted via analog public telephone system.
ISDN
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a global standard for data, video and voice transmission via regular digital telephone lines. This type of Internet connection can get as fast as 128 Kbps and usually runs at 64 Kbps minimum speed.
B-ISDN
B-ISDN (Broadband ISDN) this type of internet connection is almost the same as the ISDN connection, except for B-ISDN uses fiber optic telephone lines and not a regular telephone wire to process connection data.
SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) is the approved and widely accepted format for activating fiber-optic transmission system. This system is the core foundation of B-ISDN physical Internet connection.
DSL
DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines) this type of internet connection employs 2-wire copper telephone line that is attached to the premise. This type of connection allows you to always stay connected on the internet and still make you phone line available for calls.
ADSL and SDSL are the two main classification of home DSL.
ADSL
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Internet connection requires a specific ADSL modem to be able to connect to the internet. This type of connection sustains 1.5 to 9 Mbps data downstream rate and 16 to 640 Kbps speed rate during data upstream.
SDSL
SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) this type of Internet connection can support larger amount of data transmission via available copper telephone wires (POTS). Digital data transmissions are processed in the high-frequency platform of the telephone lines which can go as fast as 3 Mbps. Unlike ADSL this type of internet connection can not simultaneously function with your phone's regular function for voice calls if they both access similar telephone wire.
Cable
Cable Internet type of connection provides broadband internet via cable modem, which functions through cable TV lines. Specific TV channels are designated to transmit or process data between the connected computer and the Internet.
Coaxial cable for cable TV provides abundant resources to accommodate greater bandwidth and therefore sustaining a faster Internet connection for its user.
Cable Internet connection can run at a minimum speed of 512 Kbps and 20Mbps at max.
Wireless Internet Connection
Wireless broadband Internet connection eliminates the use of telephone or cable wires. It allows your device to connect to the Internet through radio frequency bands.
Your device does not need to be plugged to be able to access the Internet, which allows you to move around and still access your connection.
This type of connection is provided mostly on metropolitan areas and is also an expensive type of Internet connection.
T-1 Lines
T-1 lines are commonly leased by corporations and small business enterprise. This Internet connection is specifically intended to provide data processing at a speed of 1.544 Mbps.
T-1 connection is composed of 24 different single channels, each channel capable of sustaining 64 Kbps data rate transfer.
Bonded T-1
A bonded T-1 line is composed of two or more grouped T-1 lines. It is a type of Internet connection which provides twice the speed and twice the number of channels compared to a standard T-1 line connection.
T-3 Lines
T-3 lines are designated phone lined for internet connections that can provide 43 to 45 Mbps rates of transfer. Like T-1 lines T-3 Internet line connection is also composed of individual channels.
T-3 lines are popularly employed by most ISPs (internet Service Providers) which serve as the ISP's backbone of Internet connection that is also connected to a higher structure of Internet.
Satellite
IoS (Internet over Satellite) provides Internet connection via satellites orbiting the earth. It provides slower data transfer due to the travel distance of information from earth to the satellite and back.
This Internet connection can provide a minimum transfer rate of 492 Kbps and a maximum of 512 Kbps.
Most types of Internet connection are readily available to general users. However, some of these connections such as T-1 and T-3 connection are offered exclusively to corporations or business enterprises due to their expensive connection cost.
