Link Sharing - The Truth

Search Engines (seo) No Comments »

linksLink sharing doesn’t work. That might sound a bit dramatic but no, it does not. I’ve been doing some research (during the early hours of the morning) and I’m amazed at the number of websites out there adopting the most insane techniques in order to climb SERPs.

I must admit, I was intrigued by the methods at first. I mean, who wouldn’t like to get a week’s work done in a few minutes? :) But you know what they say, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.

The biggest monster of all is the promise of instantaneous link share with thousands of quality websites. This basically involves joining a poorly code shabby directory which is copied many times over thousands of different domains. There’s several things wrong with that: Read the rest of this entry »

How To Build Your List By Using iFrames

Marketing No Comments »

iframeRetaining your visitor’s attention while they are on your site is a well-known problem for many webmasters. Visitors get distracted and click away from your page or site without performing your chosen tasks you had planned for them to carry out.

How rude of them!

Many times it is the webmaster who is to blame… a poorly constructed webpage can result in a lost sale or a lost subscriber. Many times the core reason for this failed manipulation has to do with the layout of the webpage itself, than to any lack of interest on your visitor’s part.

Most webmasters, especially those who are into marketing, want their visitors to do two things: Read the rest of this entry »

One way Backlink: A Critical SEO Tool

Site Promotion No Comments »

one wayDespite the claims of SEO gurus, the ability to successfully drive traffic to a website is part science and part alchemy. Indeed, although there is constant speculation about the algorithms that Google and other search engines use to rank websites, the most successful traffic strategies involve a number of tools.  Strategies include everything from content rich articles and text ads to SEO tricks like meta tags and using keywords in image tags. Yet one of the most underrated yet crucial strategies that cause a website to rise in the search engine rankings is the one way backlink.

Simply put, a one way backlink occurs when a website links to your website, but your site doesn’t return the favor. The search engines long ago became savvy to the link exchange, whereby two websites entered into an agreement to each publicize the other’s link. This kind of link exchange strategy spawned a number of spam sites that existed solely to create reciprocal links. As a result, the search engines de-emphasized link exchanges and instead put a premium on the one way backlink. Why? Because a site that links to yours without seeming to get anything in return signals the search engines that your site is worthwhile. If your site has a lot of one way backlinks, it is perceived as popular by search engines. If your site is perceived as popular, it will rise in the search engine rankings. The Deep Web, or Silent Web as it’s sometimes called, is a hidden resource that every writer should know about. It could well be the answer when you want to track down some facts that Google and other search engines can’t.

It is estimated that there may be as many as 500 million web pages that are indexed by Google, MSN, Yahoo and others. The Deep Web is actually not included in these and is reckoned to be many times greater in size!

The visible web is indexed by ’spiders’, small robot programs that wander about from site to site gathering details on links and pages to send back to base from which the search engine’s index is compiled. Read the rest of this entry »

Protecting Your Domain Name: Understanding the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Despite the simple functionality on many levels of a domain name, it is vital to the success of an online business enterprise.  At its heart, a domain name essentially is an address that tells a user of the Internet how to find a particular website.  In many instances, the owners of trade or service marks use their marks as part of their business domain names.  Nonetheless, there are many instances in which someone else may take advantage and start using the trade or service mark as part of another domain name.  With this well in mind, it is incumbent upon trade and service mark owners to monitor to make certain that others are not misusing their intellectual property in the registration of other domain names.

No matter how the domain name usage actually is discovered, trade or service mark owners have two basic options for resolving disputes over domain names. First, a person or company can take action under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Policy.  The benefits of this process is that it is relatively fast and relative inexpensive.  There are drawbacks that include the fact that this process is not available to all domain names, it is not appropriate for license disputes and damages and attorney fees cannot be recovered through this process. Yahoo Making Moves To Oust Google From Top Slot

Search Engines (seo) 1 Comment »

YahooSEO news this week comes from Yahoo with their new patents application concerning how search engines find and evaluate keyword phrases on web pages.

Currently, the words you type into a search engine will bring results from every page that have those key words in whether or not they are relevant to the item you are searching for. For example, maybe you are looking for information on Tiger Woods. Yahoo will be able, with the new technology, to assess as a group all the things you are looking for in one search session.

So, instead of throwing up pages about a tiger in the woods, if the search engine gathered other information regarding clubs, golf and green etc then it would be able to narrow it down and work more efficiently.

It is hoped that search engines utilising this software will be able to understand concepts and phrases as opposed to individual words. This should make it much easier to search and find what you are looking for.

As far as the SEO world is concerned, this should make it much easier to make a site SEO friendly, particularly if the key words and phrases are close together on the page. Keywords are one of the most important issues when it comes to making a site SEO friendly. This is what the ’spider’ picks up on and what determines your page ranking. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t Pester The Editor

Content is King, Tools and Resources 1 Comment »

editor working on a computerAs an editor, I can tell you that one of my BIGGEST pet peeves is when a writer “pesters” me every other day or once a week about his (or her) submission. I don’t mind if it’s a viable question, but what I hate is when the writer’s impatience takes hold and I feel “squeezed” as if the writer’s pestering is going to make me accept his (or her) submission faster.

I think new writers, or writers with too much time on their hands, think that a little pestering will keep him (or her) on the forefront of the editor’s mind so that when the editor sees his (or her) submission, the editor will be inclined to look at it, recognize the name, and then buy the piece. And in a way, it makes sense. But what usually happens is quite the opposite. The editor becomes annoyed with the nagging writer and decides to simply decline the article—sometimes before it has even been read. Read the rest of this entry »
