Don’t Pester The Editor

Content is King No Comments »

editorsAs an editor, I can tell you that one of my BIGGEST pet peeves is when a writer “pesters” me every other day or once a week about his (or her) submission. I don’t mind if it’s a viable question, but what I hate is when the writer’s impatience takes hold and I feel “squeezed” as if the writer’s pestering is going to make me accept his (or her) submission faster.

I think new writers, or writers with too much time on their hands, think that a little pestering will keep him (or her) on the forefront of the editor’s mind so that when the editor sees his (or her) submission, the editor will be inclined to look at it, recognize the name, and then buy the piece. And in a way, it makes sense. But what usually happens is quite the opposite. The editor becomes annoyed with the nagging writer and decides to simply decline the article—sometimes before it has even been read.

marketingI hear comments frequently that I appear to be “all over the place.”   Someone will search a topic and see an article I’ve written, and then follow a link to a teleclass I’m leading, read a press release I’ve submitted, or read about me in someone else’s newsletter.  You, too, can create this sense of being everywhere with one simple action that you take each and every week:  writing one new how-to article.

I’ve been using article marketing as my primary marketing strategy since 2005, and I have experienced tremendous results with it, things like being asked to speak at events, appearing in print publications, selling my information products to new audiences, and having people hire me to coach them based solely on the article archive they have perused on my website.

Better Writing, Content is King No Comments »

spyglass toon searchingThe Library’s closed and you need some facts to finish your article and you need them NOW! It’s time to search the Deep Web.

The Deep Web, or Silent Web as it’s sometimes called, is a hidden resource that every writer should know about. It could well be the answer when you want to track down some facts that Google and other search engines can’t.

It is estimated that there may be as many as 500 million web pages that are indexed by Google, MSN, Yahoo and others. The Deep Web is actually not included in these and is reckoned to be many times greater in size!

The visible web is indexed by ’spiders’, small robot programs that wander about from site to site gathering details on links and pages to send back to base from which the search engine’s index is compiled. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Keep Your Written Work from Being Copied and Plagiarized

Better Writing, Content is King No Comments »

By: Jack Deal

Plagiarism, don't cut and paste

It’s happened to most of us that write and if it hasn’t happened to you yet it will.  It’s only a factor of time and exposure.

Someone has stolen your labor intensive work and put their name on it.  Or, taken your work and rearranged the paragraphs and put their name on it.   Or, taken all your good ideas and reshuffled the words and put their name on it.  Or any combination of the above.

If you publish and distribute on the web you may have hundreds of articles on a large number of websites, blogs and article databases.  That’s a lot of exposure.   If I google the articles name I might find one that has not given proper credit.  Usually they are novices and correct the problem.   This type of plagiarism is easy and simple.

Why Are Publishers so Picky?

Better Writing, Content is King No Comments »

By: Tiva Kelly

picky faceGetting published is tricky. Sometimes getting a publishers approval seems like a lost cause. Why are publishers so picky? Simple. They have to be picky about the content they publish to be successful. The publisher’s job is to attract readers and keep them happy. Your job as a writer is to give publishers what they want to attract readers and keep them coming back.

What Are Publishers so Picky about?
You don’t have to get inside the head of the public to see what they are picky about. A lot of things publishers look for are common sense. Articles that require excess editing are likely to be kicked back to the writer.

Misspelled words, grammatical errors and poor sentence structure will not get you published. Likewise, an article that is over or under the recommended word count will not be accepted for publication.

Articles Are More Valuable Than Blogs

Content is King, Marketing 1 Comment »

ABC Article Directory BlogThe purpose of an article is to give your readers information they can use. Providing high-quality articles will bring readers to your site when they look for the information through search engines. An article between four and 700 words is ideal for the average online reader.

Blogs, on the other hand, are a little trickier. Many blogs are too short to efficiently cover a topic and provide a solution for the reader. Though blogs have been around for quite a while now, blogging is often considered more of a hobby than a profession.

Turn Your Blog into an Article
Don’t treat your blog posts like personal journal entries. The typical blog tends to be all about a person and their perspective on a certain topic. You might read about someone’s experience with online dating, a woman’s emotions as she goes through and recovers from weight loss surgery or a writer’s journey as he works to get his first novel published.
