6 Important Fire Safety Tips in Fire Safety Training for the Workplace

     Fires are dangerous as they can breakout in places where they are least expected. They have a tendency to spread fast and hence can get out of control very easily, endangering properly and life.

To be able to protect yourself, your colleagues, and your office during fire, you need to know about fire safety. And where best to learn than a fire safety training course? Understanding how fires are caused, how they can be prevented and how lives can be saved, is what you will achieve after you have been trained.

Here are six important fire safety tips for the workplace.

Know your building: You must know your office building in and out. You must know where the various stairs are and where each one leads out to, so that you can use them in emergency situations. You should also know where the fire extinguishers are placed so you can find them easily when you need them. Fire drills must be conducted, and employees must practice evacuating the building using the exits. It is a well-known fact that elevators are not to be used in case of fires. This is because you may become trapped in there if the current fails.

Clear the corridors: Always make sure the corridors are clear and not filled with boxes and other clutter. When people try to escape during fires, it may cause hindrance and more injuries as people are running out in panic. It is also advisable not to leave things unattended as flammable items may accidentally catch on fire.

Electrical safety: Electrical fires can be caused due to malfunctioning of electrical appliances or wear and tear of wires and cables. Regular inspection of all electrical appliances, circuit boards, and outlets for any damages or faults. You must never use extension cords to work fixed electrical appliances and always ensure that all the wiring is such that it can carry the load and is up to the electrical standards and codes. Electrical sockets must not be overloaded and worn and frayed wiring must never be hooked on to appliances.

Chemicals: Many companies use chemicals for various purposes. These chemicals may be flammable and must be stored securely in a ventilated area. You must know what chemicals these are and their flammability properties. They must be used only when required and by authorized personnel only. Employees must follow all the instructions and guidelines when using these chemicals.

Smoking policy: Every company or institution has a smoking policy. Make sure you comply with it. Smoking should only be permitted in designated areas and while disposing a cigarette make sure it is fully extinguished. Locations where chemicals and other flammable items like paint, printer ink, cleaners, and so on are placed must be off-limits for smoking. If these rules are not followed, there is a high risk of a fire breaking out.

Equipment maintenance: Make sure your equipments are working well. Check for sparking and make sure that the sparks don't reach any flammable materials. All your oil machinery, electrical appliances, and other equipment must be services regularly according to the prescribed guidelines in order to prevent accidents.
