Most people, whether in the tech world or otherwise, have heard of a webmaster. Such a position is meant to oversee a particular website. While there is no formal title of “appmaster,” it is important to know who has the ultimate say with a mobile app, especially when it is still in the development phase. Whether you are merely funding the project, or are indeed calling the shots on a daily basis, here are some things to consider for your position when examining the hierarchy of an app's development team.
When you are the day-to-day project manager of a mobile app, the majority, if not all the decisions will fall on your shoulders. Such duties include leading the rest of your team and delegating the tasks that need to be fulfilled on a daily basis. This means overseeing the financial status of the app, as well as making sure all timelines are set and deadlines are met.
The duty you have as the project manager for the app generally supersedes all other titles that you may hold in relation. In other words, if you are the principle investor, and also work as the designer for the app, your status as project manager should have priority over any other positions. In such a situation, you may find that having other titles on top of your job as project manager is simply too much. For such reason, you may need to bring on additional help for the project, which will also give you the ability to properly delegate the daily tasks that need to get done, opposed to taking them all on yourself, or improperly micromanaging the project.
Remaining Hands Off
On the other hand, if you are to remain merely an investor on the project of creating an app, then you will surely need to take on a different mindset and approach to your job. In such case, you are primarily meant to be in a supportive role to the project manager, and ultimate success of the app in general.
While this position may be involved in hiring the right person to manage the project of creating the app, you likely will not be involved in many of the delegated tasks unless you have a skill relevant to the project. With that said, the job of placing a qualified project manager is vitally important to the app's success, as well as your return on investment. For such reason, you should aim to hire a project manager that has not only worked on apps before, but knows how to properly delegate tasks without micromanaging the details of the project.
When figuring out who is going to call the shots while developing the mobile app, you must first know your role in the process. If you are in the position of project manager, then it will be your job to make the daily task-related decisions. On the other hand, if you are only in a position as an investor that is involved with the app, then you will have to take a more hands off approach, unless you share a more integral position such as programmer. If you are only involved as an investor, this does not mean you won't be important to the project. In fact, the decision of placing a credible project manager will become vital to the app's success.
