Astronomy Is Not Just About Watching The Sky During The Night..

Are you interested in science? Do you surf the web for information on astronomy or watch TV astrological programs? There can’t be any who doesn’t get amazed by the billions of stars in the sky. Last night when I was watching a TV program on astronomy on my cable connection powered by Centurylink Deals I got more involved in the topic. Just like everyone I too talk about the starts that we see during the night and the bright hot Sun during the day. But the TV program that I saw last night inspired me to gather more information about the topic. If you are someone who has a penchant for science related topics then scroll down and read the rest of the write-up to know some interesting information.

Astronomy is ancient science. Most often astronomy is confused with astrology. Astronomy is the natural science that deals with celestial objects and the phenomena that originate outside the earth’s atmosphere where as astrology deals with the human affairs with the position of celestial bodies in space. People in the early civilizations believed that Gods lived in the sky. Astronomy is a pretty much like a mix between the observation of heavenly bodies, religions and astrology.

In ancient days, observations and predictions were made on the moving heavenly bodies that were visible to the naked eye. Before the invention of telescope, the study of stars was made from the top of tall rocks and high grounds. Those days, people were driven by superstitious beliefs. Researches on sky were not encouraged in early days since people were in a fear that it would disturb gods. The beginning of mathematical and scientific astronomy was a remarkable development in astronomy. Scientific revolution started to flourish as Galileo enhanced his innovations by using telescope. And astronomy began to grow with steady and fast pace with the invention of new technology including spectroscope and photography.

Estimation of celestial bodies did not take happen instantly; it took years and years of observation. Each new object discovered where examined again and again and the descriptions were made. Galileo when first time viewed Saturn through Telescope, described Saturn as having ears. This was believed until 1655 when Christian Huygens suggested that they might be enormous rings around the planet. Not only size and shape, but the weight also was calculated. Do you know that those tiny twinkling stars are 112 million tons in weight? Another interesting fact is Saturn will float when it is dipped into a tub of water since it has less dense than water. Astronomers believe that the space is not completely empty, as there are three atoms per cubic meter.

We should realize the impact of astronomy in our daily lives. Although astronomy has made tremendous strides in understanding the space and its contents, there are numerous un-answered questions. Answers for many mysteries may require new ground and space based instruments along with advancement in theoretical and experimental physics. One big question asked most of the time is about the invisible connection between living beings and the extraterrestrial bodies like planets, meteoroids or asteroids. Well, there is no proven answer for this question – But have you ever noticed the slight changes in your mood based on the changes happening in the atmosphere? If animals are not directly connected with the nature, how come they are getting alerts about natural disasters without any scientific gadgets? – These are the considerable proofs to precede our research on the actual dominations of those extraterrestrial bodies in the daily activities of all the living beings. Things to learn in Astronomy are as vast as the universe.
