Breastfeeding With Tuberous Breast Deformity

Tuberous or tubular breasts deformity is a common malformation where the breasts are saggy, narrow and widely spaced. This has caused a lot of questions like if one will be able to produce enough milk during breastfeeding or if the breasts will grow bigger after breastfeeding.

Tuberous breasts condition start immediately after birth but is more visible during puberty and breast development. Therefore, the condition does not have health effects except for the fact that it can lead to psychological effects and other mental illness.

Can I breastfeed with tuberous breasts

The answer is YES. Of course you can lead a normal parenting life with this condition. During pregnancy, you can ask your doctor about natural progesterone. This will help stimulate the growth of glandular tissues which are responsible for secreting milk.

After delivering, try using natural herbs that increase milk production. You could also use galactagogues in order to keep the milk supply sufficient for your baby if you are working.

Try breast massage to increase stimulation. You could also breastfeed on demand and pump in between feedings. This will ensure that your baby has continuous supply of milk.

You could also use a supplementary feeding device to assist you as you breastfeed your baby. As the baby feeds on the donor milk, they will also be able to breastfeed which will stimulate the breasts to produce more milk. This also increases bonding compared to using the bottle alone.

Is this your first pregnancy? Don't worry. Doctors say that milk production increases with the number of pregnancies because the hormones produced with each pregnancy increase the growth of milk glands.

Breastfeeding after tuberous breasts correction

Tuberous breasts can be corrected through a specialized procedure where the ring constricting the development tissues is removed and the breasts filled with implants. This gives the breasts a normal shape and gives the woman the confidence of wearing cleavage tops.

After the procedure, a woman can go on with their daily life which also means that they can give birth and breastfeed. After tuberous breast reconstruction, a woman will be able to breastfeed but the milk production will not be as much as those with normal breasts. The surgery only fixes the outward appearance and not the milk glands.

In some rare cases where the glandular tissue is destroyed during surgery, a woman will not be able to produce any milk. This will therefore force her to entirely rely on supplementary lactation techniques. This risk is dependent on the procedure taken and can be discussed with your doctor during consultation.

"Can I loose my nipple sensation after surgery?"

In some cases there is loss of nipple sensation. This can be a short term or long term effect. This also depends on the type of procedure taken. If it is your tissue that is used, the sensation will return over time. Regular massage can also help to improve the softness and sensation. Re-educating your nerves by using different textures during showers and putting on lotion often helps regain the nipple sensation.Permanent loss of nipple sensation is very rare and rarely affect breastfeeding.
