Can Antioxidants Help in the Fight Against Anti Aging?

Scientists seem to have a fair number of Anti Aging Theories to keep them very occupied - and Antioxidants seem to be at the top of their list
They were first discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century and have been well documented concerning their potential to support body health.
So hereís the chemistry behind them.

What is an Antioxidant?

Oxidation describes a certain type of chemical reaction.
During this type of reaction, oxygen is added to other molecules, or particles with charge.
(Oxidation can also be defined as the loss of electrons, but Iíll keep the chemistry simple!)
Life on planet Earth is dependant on Oxidation reactions because they occur in all body cells.
However, Free Radicals are produced during these reactions.
Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or charged particles with unpaired electrons.
The Free Radicals can start chain reactions, which can damage cells.
Some Scientists believe that cell aging, illness and disease may be a consequence of Free Radical cell damage.
So, Antioxidants come to the rescue by removing Free Radicals from the reaction, limiting cellular damage.
They do this by accepting the oxygen meant for other reacting molecules.
So, Scientists believe that Antioxidants in our diet are important to maintain health, prevent illness and slow down body aging.

Natural Antioxidants in your Diet

Natural Antioxidants are most abundant in fruits and vegetables, as well as in other foods including grains, nuts, and some red meats, poultry and fish.
Some natural Antioxidants include:
Beta-carotene: found in many foods that are orange in
color, including carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, apricots, squash, pumpkin, and mangos.
Some green leafy vegetables are also rich in beta-carotene.
Some of these include collard greens, spinach, and kale.
Lycopene: Commonly found in tomatoes, watermelon, papaya, guava, apricots, pink grapefruit and blood oranges.
Lutein: found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, and kale.

Vitamin A: found in three main forms: retinol (Vitamin A1),
3,4-didehydroretinol (Vitamin A2), and 3-hydroxy-retinol (Vitamin A3). Foods rich in vitamin A include liver, carrots, sweet potatoes, egg yolks, milk and mozzarella cheese
Vitamin C: found in high concentrations in many fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin E: also known as Alpha-tocopherol, is found in many oils including wheat germ, corn, safflower and soybean oils, and is also found in mangos, nuts (almonds), broccoli and other foods.

Lipoic Acid: used to counteract free radicals in the cell mitochondria, a process which may help to slow down aging.
Lipoic acid is also thought to be effective in recycling other antioxidants back into their original form after they detoxify Free Radicals.

Green Tea: contains Polyphenols (Catechins) and Flavonols.
Green tea is very high in Antioxidants and so is really beneficial in protecting the body from oxidation damage due to free radicals.

Antioxidant Supplements

Supplements high in Antioxidants which you may find beneficial include:
Coenzyme Q10: is essential for cell mitochondria, where is helps to produce energy from fats and sugars.
Coenzyme Q10 decreases with age, so supplementation may help to increase cellular energy.

Selenium:is a mineral and an important component of most Antioxidant enzymes.
Sources include rice, wheat and Brazil nuts.
Other Antioxidant enzymes used as supplements include superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase, and Catalase.

Resveratrol: Naturally existing in the skin of grapes, Resveratrol has been associated with many health benefits.

Can Antioxidants Slow Body Aging?

Whilst antioxidants may have Anti Aging benefits, the scientific debate over which are the best Antioxidants to takecontinues.
However, a well known Anti Aging Company has produceed a dietary Anti Aging Supplement which can directly regulate, or 'reset' clusters of genes responsible for maintaining the body in a youthful state.

This Anti Aging supplement is designed to target the mitochondria of the heart, brain and muscle tissues.

So taking this supplement the scientists claim will restore your body's energy, vitality and youthfulness, because mitochondria are the 'power houses' of cellular energy.

Just think about that! An Anti Aging Supplement which will assist in maintaining your body in a youthful state!
